All Things AB Separatism (split fm Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???)

Oh but of course Smith announces her government is appealing!
Balance of power struggle between provincial legislature and the court. Legislature doesn’t like the court constraining what manner of Citizens’ Initiative petition they can authorize.

In the mean time they can address the Forever Canada petition.

Seems to be she disagrees with the duty to consult ruling.
If that's her best response, then this is done and dusted.

Not that I'm surprised coming from the Premier that thought she could grant pardons.

Although I love the call out to Quebec, please help!

I dont think the CAQ want to touch this before the provincial election in the fall.

Shes being forced to pick a side, forever canada is going to put her to the fire now. Why? Because forever canada when submitted chicked off the box legislative or policy proposal. Not referendum, which means, and this was confirmed in committee yesterday. That this will go to a vote in the legislature as a binding vote. Smith doesnt want that because it will likely reveal the true colours of the UCP

Funny, she's swearing up and down that it's the opposite.

We have now 700,000 Albertans whether they’re on the remain side or the leave side who’ve said that they want to have this public debate.

I see, only acknowledge when convenient.

Tell me she’s not a separatist.

Just to play the devil’s avocado here, I've read elected officials are supposed to represent all of their constituents, not just the people who fully agree with them politically. (e.g MPs crossing the floor).

Could Smith just be ensuring all her constituents have a voice?

I love it when the Quebec Liberal Party or the Coalition Avenir Quebec decide to listen to all their constituents and decide, ya, lets pull out all the stops and hold referendums for them...

Brooks-medhat is a very strong separation heart land, its a riding that is very anti-gov, anti vax, etc, its why she chose to run there. However separatism is still a minority not a majority voice there. So what about the rest of the population? Smith gov has shown time and again she doesn't respect the will of the majorty, example Alberta police force, Alberta pension plan, recent polling also suggest only 21% agree with the referendum topics happening on oct 21st

That’s kind of the double standard I’m pointing out though. We defend MPs crossing the floor by saying they may be representing constituents whose views no longer align with their party.

When Smith even acknowledges separatist sentiment among part of her base, suddenly representing a minority viewpoint is treated as endorsement.

As far as appealing the decision, that seems like SOP. From a common court decision to the Liberal government appealing the SCC's decision their evoking the Emergency powers was unconstitutional.

the pressure is not in alberta.

The pressure is in the UCP.

Smith knows that if the separatists leave the UCP, she loses half her supporters, half her caucus.

Her playing footsies with the separatists, and thus becoming a separatist by proxy, is about keeping the UCP as a cohesive unified party.

She knows if the separatists break off, the UCP and the separatists get demolished by the NDP.

Same calculus as the Bloc Quebecois. Before they left the PCs the PCs were much more competative.

She should have used the ‘David Cameron method’ to foment the necessary support…see how well it worked. 😉

In every other jurisdiction people address separatists sentiment by saying i hear your frustrations and will work to show you how the current arrangement can work, hoping to persuade them to change their mind.

This would be one of the only cases of holding a referendum to "listen" to their constituents. Or it would be if i believed for a second that Smith wasn't in fact a separatist.

She's doing this selfishly to placate a restive part of her own party, to keep them from running off and creating their own oddball party and thus making the NDP the defacfo governing party in alberta, and so she can try to exact concession from Ottawa.

She couldn't care less about the 75 percent of albertans who think that this is a clown show.
