Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

I was cautiously optimistic about 24 Sussex, but now I'm disappointed by this line from the PM website:

I don't think the building is significant in terms of architecture. I don't think most Canadians can even picture it in their head. It's not a national (or international) symbol of our country the way the White House is. The design and build competition should be open to demolishing the whole thing and building from scratch if the bidder wants. I'd almost prefer it be bulldozed to start with - but don't actually want to remove the ability to utilize what's there if that's practical. I think forcing the preservation of existing structure put too much constraint on what you can do with a new building and my understanding of anything historical is there's a ton of costs and challenges involved in preserving/restoring historical elements.

Re: the fundraising. Both Chretien and Harper offered to lead fundraising efforts only a couple years ago, so while Poilievre doesn't seem willing to even comment on it the last conservative PM would seem supportive of this idea. Carney also announced that donors would be public and limits on how much they can donate put in place, so there'll be some transparency.

Overall, good news to see we're finally doing something with it. This should have been solved years ago.
If I'm not mistaken there have been concerns raised about security at the site due to the relatively small lot size (minimal stand-off from threats), being on a busy public roadway, proximity to Rideau Hall (allowing both the Head of State and Head of Government to be targeted in a single attack), access from the river, etc.

I think they are missing the opportunity to relocate and build something modern and fit for purpose rather than trying to put lipstick on a pig at the current location.

I'll give Carney props for finally pulling the trigger, he is having to make decisions that while they might not be the most popular with tax payers, are needed to be made instead of kicking it down the road. 100% agree we need an official residence for the PM, and I hope the opposition recognizes this fact.
The current PM reminds me of the job of Winston Wolfe in Pulp Fiction. Winston Wolfe's most iconic line in the movie is - 'I'm Winston Wolfe I solve problems,'

Love him or hate him or just shrug your shoulders at him, Carney is tackling, addressing and dealing head on with alot of shit that's been put under the rug by Trudeau and his band, along with Harper, Martin Jr, Chretien and dare I say Mulroney.

What? Come again?

Besides renovating 24 Sussex, care to provide a list of what else he has taken care of that Mulroney through Trudeau neglected?

Built by the builder that put in the cheapest quote using shitty materials that would have the cement crumbling after 3 winters, the roof leaking in 2yrs, the drywall screws popping after 1yrs and the foundation cracked, sinking and leaking after the first winter/spring freeze-thaw period.
So . . .you've seen my handiwork.

I just found out the Gov took 24 Sussex Dr by expropriation. The guy who owned it died inside refusing to give it up.

Let it burn. What a stain.
Are you saying no official residence for our Head of Government, or just be done with this particular structure?

*****
I'm agnostic regarding a tear-down vs renovation.

I'm just concerned that we don't end up with a design that tries to reflect our
First Nations/Innuit/Metis/English/Scottish/Irish/Welsh/French/Basque/Ukranian/Icelandic/Male/Female/Rainbow/Extraterrestrial/anon heritage.

Are you the electrician that my general contractor hired for the electrical work for our renovation who decided to place the new bathroom exhaust fan venting 'next to the existing roof vent' instead of cutting out a new separate roof vent, or, are you the ESA guy who went through my house after the reno was done and didn't bother checking to see the new bathroom exhaust fan properly vented to the outside and signed off on the electrical work?

Ha. We had a house with a vent like that. Technically, so long as the vent was electrically compliant, I'm not sure where it vented to would be within their scope of authority. Building inspector for sure.

This was my 2nd major reno that I have gone through (this was occurred about 10yrs ago), so I thought that I had learn 'all that there was to learn' from the first major reno at our first house. I took pictures the before, during and after throughout the entire process. I had check in's with the general project manager every 2-3 days (we lived in the basement with our kids during this reno). I took pics of the location of all the piping and wiring before the drywall went up, with the tape measurer used to mark out where everything was. The ONLY thing that I didn't do was to check on the electrician's work in the newly created bathroom for the kids upstarts, in the attic to make sure that he had properly vented the exhaust fan piping. He didn't and it cost my thousands and thousands a few years later when we had to remove all the insulation, re-insulate and strip the roof/sheathing off and re-do. A costly mistake that I show with others to inform them to look in their attic to make sure that any bathroom exhaust fan work is properly vented.....
