CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

I agree. Let's buy and sell as much stuff as we can from and to everybody else on the planet.
For those tariffs that violate existing trade agreements, tie them up in whatever dispute mechanism there is.

If Carney really wanted to turn the screws to the Yanks, just put in export tariffs tomorrow. On just oil.
The USA needs every drop of oil right now with them drawing from the SPR, if Canadian oil had a export tariff (paid by the importer, so one case where foriegners actually pay the tariff) the yanks have two choices.
1. Import less Canadian oil, drawing down the SPR even faster, pretty much Canada teaming up with the Iranians to pressure the USA
2. Pay the costs, driving up prices in the USA even more.
Granted, the wrath would be epic. So would the fury.

So now that the White House has announced they feel they can shake us down and ignore CUSMA with this list of goods we can all agree future agreements with the Yanks really arent worth the paper theyre written on, right? Perfidious. Dishonourable.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer telegraphed that the Trump administration could impose new tariffs just as other duties are set to expire.

And yet the comment sections remain full of quislings who think we can and should bend the knee to achieve a ‘deal’.
The only good deal we’ll get is the one we already have. Anything else is just Trump trying to coerce us to make unilateral concessions so we consent to him reneging on some provision or another.

The problem is that while Canada might be a net exporter of oil and other fuel products to the United States, the nature of the distribution networks means that much of Eastern Canada is dependent on pipelines coming from US refineries...not product from the rest of Canada.
Turn of the oil taps to the US and they turn off the gasoline taps to Ontario. What happens when the manufacturing center of the country runs out of fuel to ship products to the rest of Canada (and the rest of the World)?
All the more reason to build more pipelines from the West to the East as well as the Pacific. And we need in vastly increase our domestic refining capacity as well if we don't want to continue to be vulnerable.
