This government took the same approach to announcements extending the firearms amnesty,waiting until almost the day before it expired to announce the extensions.

I really get the impression the Carney Liberals just want to drop the gun stuff writ large. I really hope Natalie Prevost gets very disappointed on that front.

2 days before a long weekend is absolutely last minute. It smacks of a knee jerk reaction to public pressure not a deliberate policy decision. They set this date when they made the badly needed relief months ago, this shouldn't have been a surprise or fuel (no oun intended) for the opposition.

They've been making the same posts for months. Are you seriously trying to dig that deep to find fault with the Tories instead of focusing on the actual issue of Carney waiting until the absolute last minute to make this announcement? It was an easy win announcement to make after trade talks fell apart to change the narrative but they fumbled it again.

Having worked as a low-level federal info-machine peon in bureaucracies for both Blue and Red governments, I've seen:
1) some decisions made so last minute, we at the coalface had to find out during Question Period exactly what was happening; and
2) decisions planned and prepared way far out coming to a screeching halt when circumstances changed JUST before being announced (I was lucky enough to not see any announced just before huge changes in situation nullifying the announcement).

So it could be either a long-planned announcement just grunted out now (a la "we can get a Twitter post approved in 2 weeks"), or it could be a "holy shit - let's do this NOOOOOOOOW!"

As for Team Blue's pre-response, looks bad, but I don't know enough about their processes to say if anyone should be fired or not. More likely like @brihard explained re: loadsa somewhat inexperienced folk just following orders.

The Correctional Service of Canada awarded Melanite a $100,000 contract in 2019, while in 2021 the company won a $380,000 contract from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.

Melanite not only received government contracts, but also filed complaints when it was not awarded them. In 2019, the company alleged it was improperly disqualified from a military contract, while in 2021 it alleged “irregularities” in the bidding process.

Originally a “one-man show,” Melanite has grown “into a team of several employees, consultants, and contractors,” according to documents filed in Federal Court.

“Since its inception, it has proudly served all levels of government in Canada by supplying equipment and services to organizations such as universities, municipalities, and provincial and federal departments.”

Melanite’s most recent contract was in 2024, when it was granted a $50,000 job from the Canadian Forces to supply “road motor vehicles” to Borden, Ont., the location of the military’s largest training base.

This is also what comes from not resourcing the people doing background checks and security clearances properly.

I doubt it. The Liberals have taken steps to double down on the consequences of non-compliance with the poorly compensated confiscation program.

The upside is that the tens of thousands of people who are likely to eventually get charged will probably incur significant delay in facing trial, resulting in Jordan rulings and eventual stays.

In her defense, she wasn't yet a member of the Liberal caucus, so she didn't fully understand her ethical responsibilities as well as Liberals do. She should be alright now that she's crossed the floor from the NDP.

Conversely, had they made the announcement before the three by-elections, they’d be getting shit on for that and we’d be hearing - probably from some right here on army.ca - that they were playing electoral politics with tax policy aimed to reduce the sting of the trade war.

That response would be something I'd be expect for the hyper partisan right, and same hyper partisan left that decries the "bad timing" of Pollievre's scheduled social media posts. Both of those opinions should be discounted by the majority.

On by elections, the only surprise is that the Bloc didn't compete more with the LPC for Chicoutimi. Political pundits said the reason Martel held that riding (even as a CPC) is he was extremely popular and well respected locally, even if he had been a green party, he would have gotten elected. The new MP, very tactical decision (politically from Carney) to put a Dairy board member (and former President) up, and earn the dairy farm votes.

Beaches was no surprise (it is extremely left) however be warned, the NDP numbers increased considerably, some saying the left youth vote is going to the NDP.

BC riding was one I was surprised the LPC cleaned up as well as they did.

I have offered up my opinion that Carney scuttled the trade deal last minute to gain political points, you can call me delusional or whatever you want. I have also heard rumours that Doug Ford was refusing to cooperate with Carney and said he would NEVER put American Booze back on the shelf. This is no help. I would say to Dougie "what is better? 25% possibly reducing to 15% tariffs in time or 50% tariffs?" Its rather obvious. There is NO getting a trade deal without losing a chunk off our asses.

And now Dougie is complaining about Carneys mass imports of Chinese EVs? Pick a F-ing lane, Doug.

Now someone said it best here. If we are going to ride a few years with this current government, then switching out Pierre now (which the Liberals seem eager to do) will allow the LPC, the paid for media and paid for polling companies a chance to define the next person. I still look at the "Harper will never be PM..." shit I heard all the way up until he was PM. I may very well be way wrong. Time will tell.

I will say this, the LPC (Not Trump, he is the same belligerent President he was 18 months ago) sure got the Nation (especially the Liberal over 65 crowd) really worked up over the trade deal.
