Interesting article and I like the round cutaway's. For a round like the 57mm, the more complex you make it, the less terminal effect it will have, as the HE and fragmentation aspects get sacrificed to make room. Given the short range band of the 57mm and it's high ROF, and the need for the missile/drone to stay on target on it's final run in. I think the same effect can be achieved with small changes in bearing and elevation of the gun during the shoot, causing the rounds to explode in interlapping explosions over a wider area.

Guided munitions may be far more useful for the 127mm mount. From that article, I have wonder why the RN does not change to the 127mm for their Type 45's, when they go into refit. Given that their Type 26 will be using the same gun?

High ROF and overlapping rounds from bearing and elevation changes results in more rounds expended per engagagement, increasing the cost of the engagement, and depleting the magazine faster.

I note that the SAAB GRP MCMV proposal has a 40mm main gun but also proposes the use of its Nimbrix low cost missile system. It is essentially a 3P 40mm round projectile mounted on a manoeuverable rocket with intelligent controls.

Most of the drones don't seem to need much applied energy to swat the out the sky. They just need to be physically swatted.
