17 Oct 2026: Major fire at CFB Wainwright

I am not sure what the answer is. Beyond the NoK notification system, which is set up for single digit casualties at one time, the Assisting Officer requirements out of this one incident will eat all of 1 Brigade, if not also significantly impact the Army for months to come.

For Mass Casualty Incident ( MCI ), do CAF paramedics use Advanced Medical Priority Dispatch System (AMPDS) , and the 5-level Prehospital Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) and Hospital Destination Coordinators?
Units are required to bring their own ambulances & medics for certain training. Beyond that, most bases & training areas depend on municipal ambulance.

Edmonton and Calgary each have eight bed burn units. I would assume they can probably surge to a few more beds in an emergency, but I would also assume neither was vacant. I expect that ICU likely took some.

I saw a post on Twitter this morning where a mother identified her son at 1 Fd Amb as being one of the seriously injured.

Carney to speak any minute now.

Her son is a Medic IIRC.

CBC is now saying they confirm seven killed. That I think makes this the worst CAR loss since HMCS Kootenay, 1969.
it might be getting worse, wife just told me medical examiner is clearing house to make space (she works the funeral industry)

PM is about to speak

Those are probably only the ones that the notifications have been done, there will probably be more...
That would reconcile the two numbers for now. But hopefully the media has simply over reported bad info.

Just hearing on CBC radio a live statement from PMMC saying 4 dead & “dozens … seriously” wounded.

Flags at fed buildings across Canada to below @ half mast as well.

Credit where due - CBC Radio has been running non-stop coverage. Not perfect - I would have put their lead mil correspondent Murray Brewster hosting and not relying as much on a guy who’s been to Wainwright - but they’re trying. You can tell during the newscasts the junior reporters don’t know the details about the CF - but who in the general public does?

Late add: as of 1250E they’re speaking to Peter Mackay wearing his former DefMin hat.

Late add 2: They seem to be cutting away to longer statements & announcements as if 1306E.

I suspect that for a long while the Med side on the CAF were not tracking fully casualties. At least beyond the emerg services level.

Unlikely the press were any better

And here are his comments (archived here):
Yesterday afternoon, a violent, fast-moving fire swept through the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Base in Wainwright, Alberta.

What followed was one of the worst tragedies for the Forces on Canadian soil in peacetime.

I regret that I can confirm at this time that four service members have lost their lives and their next of kin have been notified. Dozens more are seriously wounded.

As the situation is evolving rapidly, I have asked that a detailed account and formal briefing be provided to Canadians this afternoon by senior officials on the ground in Wainwright, including the Minister of National Defence, the Minister of Emergency Preparedness, and CAF Major-General Wade Rutland. They will be joined by provincial ministers and senior officials.

I would like to take this opportunity to commend the close collaboration between all levels of government.

Since last evening, Premier Smith and I have been in regular contact. Our ministers and officials have coordinated the response deploying resources from the CAF, public safety, local fire department, and Alberta emergency and medical services.

The nation is in mourning for those brave members of our Armed Forces whom we have lost. And I have asked the flags on all federal buildings to be flown at half-mast to honour them.

We are praying for the wounded.

And we stand in solidarity and compassion for the families, friends, and colleagues of all those affected by this tragedy.

Canadians come together in crisis. That is the best of our country.

Military and civilian crews fought this fire through the night, in some of the worst conditions imaginable, risking their lives to protect their fellow Canadians.

STARS Air ambulance crews flew in from Edmonton and Saskatoon.

Paramedics, nurses, and doctors in Wainwright, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary are caring for victims.

The people of Wainwright are taking care of their own.

Thank you to Albertans and Canadians who are giving blood. Who are feeding and housing emergency crews. Who are providing solace and comfort to those in their darkest hour.

Those affected came from bases across the country, including reservists and soldiers from the storied Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.

Throughout Canada’s history, the Princess Pats have fought for freedom, democracy, and human dignity. In the First World War, in the Second World War, in Korea, in Afghanistan, and during numerous peace keeping missions.

That is the record, that is the standard, those are the values of the women and men who were training on the Alberta prairie yesterday afternoon when disaster struck.

That commitment, that service, those ideals are the debts we, as Canadians, owe to them.

Our country depends on the women and men of the CAF. Our rights, our freedoms, our way of life are fought for and defended every single day by Canadians who answer the call.

CFB Wainwright is where the women and men of our Armed Forces learn to do the hardest things this country can ask of anyone.

Those we lost were training to defend Canada. To serve Canada.

Now Canada serves them.

We will be there for their families for as long as they need. We will care for the injured through every step of their recovery. And we will stand by the women and men of our Armed Forces as they bear the weight of this loss.

They will not carry it alone.

In Canada, we take care of one another.

Thank you.

I just saw a video on Facebook showing the winds just south of the base which a farmer took just before evacuating. I'm not sure I've ever seen winds this severe. No wonder the fire spread quickly. Poor souls. I will be praying hard tonight.

There were wind warnings a day or so beforehand, so not surprising.

A bit of foreign MSM coverage:
"Carney says 4 service members killed and dozens injured in fire at Alberta military base" (NPR)
" 'Serious incident' at Canada base causes deaths, sparks fire" (Le Monde)
