I made one out of a spare fleece sweater...comfy goodness ;) It sits in the top of my ruck and holds things like my scarf and other little things.

IIRC the bottoms are open, so yes, a smoke grenade would fit. However, if it's a smoke without a spoon, you're going to need to secure it somehow as it'll just slip out the bottom.
