17 Oct 2026: Major fire at CFB Wainwright

In 1993 upon return from Croatia we cut our Reservists loose within five days of returning. A deep down feeling told me this was wrong....

And it appears it hasn't been resolved.
Works both ways too, I see last minute asks to try and fill tour spots on 60 days notice. I dont expect proper work up training in less than 60 days to latvia

I cannot give great detail about internal VAC people & processes, but I know that lack of a CF98 or 663 will not be a show stopper in this case (for Res F Pte Bloggins who breaks a toe on a weekend Ex, it does complicate it). It is what is on a medical record (military and/or civilian) that can be the deciding factor. These troops are being tracked closely.

Here, we have received the bulk CASREP giving name/rank/SN for all of those killed and injured. Actions have been initiated, Designated Assistants are going out to all impacted families, briefings for the MND/CDS etc on benefits and services available to Reg F & Res F casualties are being prepped/delivered. At least in this case, as it is so high profile, they will not be overlooked.
Good to hear - thanks for sharing that.

The RM of Wainwright is about 5000 people, so they will likely have a volunteer fire service of corresponding size. I can only assume the surrounding rural municipalities would be similar. Most VFFs have standard level first aid/CPR training. According to WIki, SARTECs are trained to 'primary care paramedic standards'. That level of training in the civilian world would probably only available in cities like Edmonton and possibly air ambulances.

She wasn't at the big announcement yesterday either, with the MND and Premier of Alberta, leaving the CAF to be represented by a fairly new (although clearly capable) MGEN.

I wonder if she understands what kind of message that sends...
I starting to wonder if she's actually been cut out of the process ? It's actually quite odd.

Or she’s distancing herself on purpose for some reason …

I was pondering why the CDS wasn’t on camera. I did follow my own advice and refused to speculate

I recall a front page story in the Montreal Gazette in the early 90s; an injured Army Reserve soldier had been loaded on a jet to go home. Pay ceased while on his flight. He spent weeks trying to get paid / get reserve force compensation started, but block leave had started. Somehow "Come back in January when we're back from leave" turned into "There's a cheque waiting at the cashier cage" once he was on the front page, saying "I just want enough to get my girlfriend a present".

I personally know a reservist trying to get compensation for over a year now but getting the runaround. Injured on an expeditionary op and hasnt been able to go back to his construction job. The apparent lack of care from the medical system is wild.

Fascinating that the fastest way to any scene is still by fast plane and parachute.

Even if it is just a logistical move.

The biggest one day mass casualty incident in the CAF since 1988, in peace or war.

Honestly now: Wayne, Walt, the Big Cod, any other CDS that you can think of ... would they have been there, or not?

Feel free to DM me with non-clinical details. I can check and see what we are aware of at CAF TG.

In the interest of fairness, CDS Carignan was in Tokyo just a few days ago; did this all go down while she was in transit back and/or cause her trip to be abbreviated? I’ve done the Japan to Canada travel and you’re out of the loop for a while.

So? The Army Commander wasn’t there either, but the general officer commanding those troops was there. We don’t need our strategic leaders to be like a kindergarten soccer team.

There you go, being reasonable again ;)
