With a week left in Canada’s federal election campaign, the Conservative Party is ahead in the Vancouver Island riding of Cowichan—Malahat—Langford, a new Research Co. poll has found.

In the mixed mode survey of a representative sample of eligible voters in this constituency, 36% of respondents say they will cast a ballot for Conservative candidate Jeff Kibble, while 29% would support incumbent MP Alistair MacGregor of the New Democratic Party (NDP).

It's repeat criminals who are clogging up the justice system. If criminals were kept behind bars longer there would be less stress on the court system. Less stress on the court system means they don't have to make weak deals meaning criminals will get longer sentences.

We are feeling the effects. Our population has risen somewhat significantly in the last two months. A lot are on remand, playing the waiting game.

My union voted to support the local Conservative candidate in the election, and as a Steelworkers union that is traditionally very strong NDP territory.

I don’t think there is any disputing Poliviere's stance. It's been clear and concise since the very beginning, even before the election anytime it was mentioned in the House.

Yet we have carney vehemently accusing Poliviere of the opposite and going against the constitution to do it. Not even trying to be coy or slippery in his words. Just flat out lying in plain old french. What’s wrong with this guy and his constant lying?

We are feeling the effects. Our population has risen somewhat significantly in the last two months. A lot are on remand, playing the waiting game.

My dad would tell you that the federal prisons are bursting at the seams. He is an interesting confluence of political ideals and beliefs.

I think we are feeling the effects of decades of poor infrastructure investment, from transportation to prisons' to the CAF to hospitals. I think the GoC Canadian citizenry needs to realize we have been spending to much on our wants (social spending) and not enough on our needs.

For sure.

However, which level of government builds/runs most (admittedly, not all) of the jail space? Not everyone ends up doing federal time.

And if jails are too crowded, how much less time are “guests” spending in jail (or being kept outta custody) because “sorry, no room at the inn”?

Any party platforms out there big on sending mo’ money to the provinces/territories to build more jail space? I haven’t heard any such promises but I stand to be corrected.

Another one of those federation problems (like health care) where, to mangle the proverb, failure often has more than one parent.

It's not even Trudeau! We have fundamental shortage of judges and prosecutors in Canada, something hired and managed by the provinces. Since we don't have enough, and because of the supreme court putting a time limit on every case, aggressive please bargins are made to get convictions before times up and people go free. If we want to fix that, provinces need to hire more.

There is a lot of problems that people blame te federal government for that they have nothing to do with.

Partially. Justices of the Superior and Appellate courts are federally appointed (I believe the province pays them) but, as pointed out, the majority of the load on the justice system is at the lower levels which are provincially appointed, which also funds the infrastructure, support staff, etc.

A three-day rolling sample by Nanos Research has the Liberals at 43 per cent over the Conservatives who are at 37 per cent nationally. The NDP is at 10 per cent.

Interesting little shift showing NDP votes coming back to them from the LPC. This could be the week that sees the LPC lead shrink. The cold feet thing I mentioned previously.

This could end up being a fight for minority status between the LPC and CPC.
