Well, pretty much the only thing historically correct about that movie was the names of characters and battles, although they didn't even get that right. Compared to English history, the transition of the Crown from King to King was relatively peaceful, at least compared to England. England only really ever controlled Scotland for a couple of years, not generations like Mel Gibson would lead you to believe.

However Biden has to deal with his own version of William Wallace now, fomenting rebellion in the nether regions.

If 'The Nether' included day trips to the museum and a nice chicken dinner for the early bird special :)

Democrats and their supporters are doing a fine job of fomenting rebellion all by themselves. The "OK let's all be friends now" plea is DRT.

National Guard members say they feel betrayed after being 'banished to a parking garage'

Thousands of troops were kicked out of the Capitol building the day after inauguration, sparking outrage from U.S. representatives

A unit of 5,000 National Guard members were moved to a nearby parking garage that had limited cell and internet reception, one electrical outlet and a single two-stall bathroom, Politico reported.

Research from NPR showing that approximately 20% of all arrests stemming from 6 Jan are military veterans, compared to about 7% of the total US population. At least one of those charged referenced their oath of enlistment as justification on social media.

NPR compiled a list of individuals facing federal or District of Columbia charges in connection with the events of Jan. 6. Of more than 140 charged so far, a review of military records, social media accounts, court documents and news reports indicate at least 27 of those charged, or nearly 20%, have served or are currently serving in the U.S. military. To put that number in perspective, only about 7% of all American adults are military veterans, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Several veterans are charged with violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. One of them is Larry Rendall Brock Jr. The Air Force veteran was photographed in a military-style helmet and tactical vest carrying flex cuffs inside the Capitol. He posted on Facebook that he was preparing for a "Second Civil War," according to documents filed in federal court. In the weeks after Biden's victory, Brock posted that "we are now under occupation by a hostile governing force."

"I see no distinction between a group of Americans seizing power and governing with complete disregard to the Constitution and an invading force of Chinese communists accomplishing the same objective," Brock wrote. (There is no credible evidence of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election.) He ended his post with a reference to the oath taken by members of the military: "Against all enemies foreign and domestic."

It's enough of a sample size and incidence rate to be notable, but I'm not entirely sure what to take from this. Does the US need to do a better job supporting their members as they transition to civilian life? Are veterans who hold extremist beliefs more likely to act on them given that the military often encourages a direct approach to problem solving? Are extremist groups like Proud Boys, Oathkeepers, Three Percenters, etc. attracting vets by functioning in some ways as a bizarro-world version of a legion-style social organization? It would be interesting to look into, assuming that you could get these people to give you an honest answer.

To keep it in perspective, there was miscommunication and they only stayed there several hours. This was not some great liberal plot to denigrate or abuse the military as is being touted in some quarters.

Justice Department, FBI debate not charging some of the Capitol rioters

Some big decisions will have to be made at the Justice Department. With about 800 possible offenders some hard choices will have to be made. It's going to take a while for all this to be taken care of but I think the Justice Department can get it done and ensure justice is served.
There are a host of other factors complicating the discussions, many of which center not around the politics of the riot, but the real-world work of investigators and prosecutors, these people said.
Prosecutors have signaled they are looking to bring charges of seditious conspiracy against anyone who planned and carried out violence aimed at the government — a charge that carries a maximum possible prison sentence of 20 years.

But even as Justice Department officials look to bring those types of cases, they privately acknowledge those more determined and dangerous individuals may have operated within a broader sea of people who rushed through the doors but didn’t do much else, and prosecutors will ultimately have to decide if all of those lesser offenders should be charged.

only about 7% of all American adults are military veterans

The proportion of vets might still be high after correcting to a meaningful set of adults, but the first thing to do is read critically and discard the comparison to the "7%" if it spans the entire age range of adults; the people likely to misbehave are not likely to include many old or elderly folk.

Well, Zip-Tie Cuff Guy did bring his mom...and she’s 57, so in the older spectrum of the population.

Man charged in Capitol riot worked for FBI, lawyer says

WASHINGTON — A man who authorities say is a leader of the far-right Oath Keepers militia group and helped to organize a ring of other extremists and led them in the attack last month at the U.S. Capitol has held a top-secret security clearance for decades and previously worked for the FBI, his attorney said Monday.

He was a section chief from 2009-2010, and prior to that a lieutenant commander in the Navy.

I wonder what he's been doing for the last 11 years? 🤨

Let's hope his punishment is more severe than that of some dumb nitwit caught up in online conspiracy theories. I know I'm getting old when all I can think is "shame on him"

So far, this is only his attorney speaking. It has not been confirmed as fact.
