Six Canadian soldiers injured in firefight

Six Canadian soldiers were injured in a firefight with the Taliban on Thursday after they were ambushed west of Kandahar.

The soldiers were conducting a patrol through the volatile Zhari district a couple of hours after sunrise when their armoured vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device, said a spokesman for the Canadian military.

The men leapt from their disabled vehicle to find themselves under attack by insurgents. A gunfight ensued and they sustained various types of wounds. The military will not elaborate on the injuries, other than to say they were not serious.

The injured soldiers were evacuated by helicopter to a multinational hospital on the Kandahar Airforce Base, an operations centre for NATO forces, where they were treated and released.

All of the men have informed their families about the incident but the military will not release their names.

Noise of the gunfire and the helicopters was heard by Canadian reporters in the area and information about the incident was released after they called to find out what had occurred and why the soldiers were in that particular area.

“They were conducting security operations and because the operation is ongoing, I can't comment further,” Navy Lt. Al Blondin, a media officer in Afghanistan, said when asked about the nature of the mission.

The Zhari district has been one of the most difficult battlegrounds for Canadian troops in Afghanistan.

The largest campaign conducted in Kandahar last summer was an offensive to retake ground from the Taliban that had previously been held by NATO forces.

Get well soon guys, hope none of the injuries were serious enough to affect their lives.

my only question is why dose the media need to know this: reporters in the area and information about the incident was released after they called to find out what had occurred and why the soldiers were in that particular area
