Air Force major charged in firearms bust in Kingston, Petawawa

When we finally moved the rest of our furniture and effects from our storage shed in Manitoba to our new home in SW Ontario, I rented a Ryder truck from North Dakota to drop off in Detroit. The cost was about half of a U-Haul and we were taking the US route.

I have three guns - all trigger locked - a 22 bolt action, a K98 Mauser and a 450/577 Martini-Henry.

When I arrived at the US border I declared the rifles and was surprised to be advised that I should have had pre-clearance for them through the Alcohol, Firearms and Tobacco folks. I didn't, but the border folks decided to let me through on condition the cargo compartment of the truck was sealed by them and that I report to the US border folks in Detroit to check and remove the seal before transiting to Canada. Effectively to make sure I didn't dispose of them in the US.

In short the folks in Detroit had no clue about me when I arrived (I would have thought an annotation would have been put into my electronic record in ND - nope). We had an initial tense ten minutes (including a "stand away from the truck, Sir" while holding his holstered gun) but when one of the guys discovered that I had a rifle the same as was used in the movie "Zulu" things suddenly got very friendly.

No issues with Canada Customs.

I worked with a couple of 'gun enthusiasts' who both felt that laws were others and they didn't need to follow them because they were knowledgeable and safe.

He imported lower receivers and handguns frames without serial numbers and hid that. He knew exactly what he was doing. There’s no ‘law abiding gun owner’ defence or anything remotely close to it to be made here.

It also means that if he possessed those unserialized firearms while posted to NORAD in Colorado, he was committing multiple criminal offences in a foreign jurisdiction as a Canadian Forces officer OUTCAN.

This gentleman should no longer be a member of CAF following this.

Sometimes it feels like the CAF employs the same HR as Ottawa Police, only with less teeth.

Then you don't want to hear this but I bought it near Barrie in 1963 or 4 for $40.00 with 5 live rounds (recent manufacture) thrown in. I still have those.

Interesting - while I was searching for an image I saw the calibre as 577/450. I always thought it was the other way around. Live and learn.

I have a bare handful of rounds for my M-H, never fired the fullbore one.

I have fired the .22 cadet one though. It's good fun and VERY accurate.

Sorry, I'm with @brihard on this one. He's a gun smuggler who has embarrassed the CAF, betrayed his commission and cast a bad light on all lawful gun owners.

If the CAF retains him (doubtful) his usefulness is seriously impaired.

I'm quite in favor of heavy handed sentences for anyone in positions of authority.

Embarrassing the CAF and casting gun owners in a bad light wouldn't be aggravating factors. Would breach of trust or something along those lines?

I'm guessing being charged with 'gun running' might be a bit of a precedent setter.

To be fair, he's not the first CAF member to be charged with smuggling. He just took this to a whole new level.
