All Things AB Separatism (split fm Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???)

Hold a vote. It looks like an easy win and achieves a useful aim, and is comparatively low-cost.

Here is the one major problem with holding a vote that no one is talking about yet. With the privacy breach, and the voter roll being leaked publically, which includes every ones name, address, elector #, electoral division, and polling district. It heavily increases the risk of fraud unless major changes are made. With that list as it is, whats to stop a few separatist supporters from trying to add votes at strategic polling locations?

It is quite clear that Altair prefers the inflammatory approach. You have to wonder, to what end?

Stipulating that I haven't read into the details of the breach, I assume it is information relevant to any future elections. Can't hold off on any kind of voting forever; might as well start dealing with the problem now.

What is inflammatory is the private information of every albertan in the hands of every bad actor because these folks couldn't even get the votes they needed properly without resorting to cheating. They had more time than the forever canada group and still struggled to reach the numbers required until magically they trained their canvasers to use a list they has no right to have, never mind blast it publicly for all to see.

Every woman hiding from a abusive spouse who ends up dead, their fault. Blood on their hands. That's inflammatory.

That's to say nothing about how they have done jack all to deserve what they do have. Have they made a political party? Yes, it lost to the ndp in a rural riding. They dont have a mandate by the people to do this, they have a bunch of people throwing a grade A hissy fit, while inviting foreign actors to fund them, while every malicious actor in the world tries to destabilize canada using them to do it.

If they wanted to do it they should earn it. Go make a political party, go win an election with separatism as your goal, go run a referendum with your mandate. This separation from wish is, in my opinion, pathetic, doubly so when the premier has greased every challenge they might have faced and even then they screw it up royally.

That said, it has exposed certain canadians for putting agendas over principles, so i guess they were useful in that regard, so thank you mr rath.

The sooner this pathetic little "movement" fizzles out, either by the courts or by albertans themselves, the better.

If danielle smith puts this in the referendum she's a separatist.

Full stop.

Which she is already, but it would remove any plausible deniability, and she can go into the next provincial election with that label firmly attached to her.
So basically if she doesn't she's still a seperatist, she's just hiding it.

Pretty much affects every municipal, provincial and federal election in AB until its dealt with

Foreign interference doesn't seem to bother any government to the least. We still don't know which MPs are connected to the Chinese. Don't preach interference at me until the Feds do the right thing and clean their own house first. Until then its obvious no one really cares.

Plenty of similar downplaying when foreign interference concerns came up at the federal level. People are more incensed over it happening when it's not their political camp at ground zero, less when it is.

I'm sure Smith's detractors will have no issue with her bussing in US students to vote for whatever.

All the more reason to figure out how to work through it now. A messy referendum in doubt will be easier to deal with than any future election in doubt, and may yield mitigation measures for the latter.

Purely for educational purposes I'm sure.
How else are they supposed to understand how how the system works if they're not allowed to participate in it ?

Bottom line there is serious independence sentiment in that province that can't be ignored.

Serious enough that separatist parties that ran candidates in the last provincial election finished in fourth (or lower) place in almost every riding, behind the NDP and the Green Parties parties. The Wildrose Independence Party had about the same electoral success as the Communist Party (third in one riding).

There is a big difference between pissed off people signing a petition and a serious political movement. Unfortunately, the Alberta government gave enough room for the former to make itself appear like the latter.

Some "separatists" are just fanning the flames to grease further assertion of provincial rights within Canada, not to grease secession. It's a political play.

Concur - I bet you there is a bunch of legitimate "West Want's In" sentiment that is being expressed through this initiative. I wouldn't doubt that this also drove the current Government's calculus in how it decided to play this one.

Shame those forever Canada Albertans are not her constituents.
All Albertans are her constituents.

Pretend I'm from Missouri. Show me proof. Not your suspicions.

Actions speak louder than words.

Danielle Smith, through inaction alone, could have watched the separatist movement die. Every time, Danielle Smith has greased the road for separatists.

Canvasing take too long, with too high a bar? Lower it, lengthen the time.

Opposing referendum for Canadian unity which would mean the separatists couldn't run their referendum for a certain number of years? Slow walk it to death.

Courts deeming it unconstitutional? Change the legislation retroactively so it can go ahead anyways.

She can swear up and down that she doesn't support it, but every single one of her ACTIONS proves otherwise.

Or put another way, if someone is pissing on me while declaring it's rain, it doesn't make it rain.
Let them fight, sure. But within the rules. I doubt mr Julian would let one seven grader smash another seven grader in the face with a rock.If these folks cannot do their referendum within the confines of the rules, too had for them, they deserve their pathetic little hissy fit thrown out until they can do it properly. Rules are rules, laws are laws
So, which is it? Create chaos and mayhem? Or follow the rules and laws.

yes, however given the entire voter registry was made public, I would suggest additional safe guards need to be put in place of some kind for any vote. including assigning new elector # to every voter.
Instead of blaming some Albertans for their use of the voter registrations, I would imagine if Elections Canada were doing their jobs, the voter registry would be secured and unobtainable, to those without clearance or legal need.

All this from a person advocating closer ties with China?

The UCP has explicitly embraced the Citizen Initiative process as a recognized way for force the provincial government to a separation referendum. They did not have to do this, it was a choice. The correct answer to separatists could have been “go form a party and get elected”.

Or “Here’s the rules to get an issue to a referendum. If you meet the conditions , we’ll hold one. But we’re not changing the rules for you.”

Its moot.
Only because Smith wants it moot. Forever Canada should get their vote first. A no vote for that doesnt trigger separation, but a yes vote woukd shut down separation. Smith cant have that, she needs separation right now politically to hold onto her own job
