Santa has quit smoking.

At least he has in a new Canadian version of Twas the Night Before Christmas edited "for the benefit of children of the 21st century" and released this month.

"Exposure to the depiction of Santa smoking a pipe cannot be good," said Pamela McColl, an anti-smoking advocate who calls nicotine addiction "a pediatric disease" for which "prevention must start early."

The offending verse of the 1823 poem attributed to Clement C. Moore, also called A Visit from St. Nicholas, is: "The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, and the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath."

"In light of the science and studies about the harmful influence of characters smoking on young readers we have taken out the depictions of Santa with a pipe," says the description of the book from McColl's Vancouver-based independent publishing company, Grafton and Scratch.

Good example of a religious bias

http://theworkingdog.wordpress.com/2011/07/12/toronto-school-allows-muslim-service-where-girls-sit-behind-men/

A Toronto Middle School has decided to allow an imam conduct Muslim Friday Prayers every Friday afternoon in the school’s cafeteria.  As well the group is allowed to discriminate against women and women having their menstrual period.

As out of place as this sounds, details of some of the prayer’s format are very alarming.  Male students sit in the front of the room, female students sit behind them and then female students with their menstrual period have to sit behind these females.  As well the females have to enter through a side door while the males enter through the front.

TFTFY

The woman were removed because it violated dress policy.  It would have happened regardless if it was a crescent moon or a scarlet a.

Ok except the fact it was not a cresent moon or Scarlet A.  ::)

the court’s decision that wearing a cross or crucifix is a matter of personal choice and not a mandate of the religion. This exempts the symbol of Christianity from the special status given to other religious emblems like the Muslim hijab or Sikh turban under Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Our own PC stupidity in play.  Gotta love a double-standard!  ::)

Double standards WRT the Christian faith have been applied in ever increasing amounts over the last 20 years.  We get more and more sensitive all the time for Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Jews etc. but desensitized to Christians almost to the point of Christian bashing being a Western past time.  It's sickening.

There are always double-standards

Or how about the United White College Fund?  Not that having the United Negro College Fund is a bad thing, but non-black people also live in impoverished areas and could use the help to attend higher learning.

Cultural values are things that are always evolving in any society but at a faster rate in a free society.
The overreactions and knee jerk "solutions" or "laws" listed above are natural and eventually will be fixed when common sense finally sets in.
I think it is a good thing to test the limits and then find a middle ground. Sometimes the process goes too far one way or the other or too quickly and without much thought - that's how you get stupid laws (then there are also stupid people badly implementing good legislation and totally missing the intent). And sometimes it is pretty slow as in the case of racial equality - about 100 years in the US from emancipation to somewhat equal opportunity for blacks.
So I'm pretty optimistic that common sense will prevail and we continue improving.

What the heck did my wife put in my coffee this morning??
