Hey folks, I'm wondering what personal weapons the armoured troops use. The C-7 seems a little cumbersome to be lugging around in a tank, is a modified version? Also a pistol would seem reasonable as per confined space but I don't know and would like to know. Thanks

Well, since none of the young guys have spoken up yet...

When I was in (out in 88), armour soldiers used the C8 carbine, folding stock with a shorter barrel. Nice little weapon in a vehicle but not as accurate as the C7. Pistols are more convenient and are ok for a backup but I certainly wouldn't go to war with one. Again, my info is dated but I don't think things have changed since then.

It's still a C-8, usually (in theatre) with a pistol to boot (for those who choose one).

Yup seems logical, now how about grenades. Bouncing around in a coyote, do they get carried or no?

It all depends on the platform and your task.
Also take into account that all c-7's are being up-graded to the c-7a2.

I've never carried grenades in an armoured vehicle - they'd be of limited use and would be a real pain in the a** if strapped to you.  Give me main gun anytime... Doesn't mean it couldn't happen, though.

As for the C-7A2, it is still too long to be carried mounted, IMHO.  We had them on Athena.  Then again, I wasn't in a squadron at the time, so maybe one of the current guys knows better than I do.

Cheers,

TR

We carried grenades in our Bisons on Athena but they stayed in the box they came in and were usualy in the bench locker ( not much use ).

"armour soldiers used the C8 carbine, folding stock with a shorter barrel"

If you fold the stock on a C8, they will lock you up.  ;D

I have heard rumors about a hunt for small personal weapons for CSS and/or vehicle mounted soldiers. Anybody else heard any rumblings? Would be nice ( a C-7 is useless in a Nissan Terrano! Trust me ).  :threat:

Something like an HK MP5 or a pistol like the Sig Sauer or Browning 9mm? Going to war with a pistol doesn't seem too cool as mentioned before but the HK MP5 seems to hold a mystical status, like it's only for special forces etc. Is the C7 A2 another version of the M-4, it looks pretty similar. The Enfield L85AI or SA80 would probably make for a good armoured crew weapon also.

They could just save money and give us back our SMGs that they replaced with the C8.  We still have them in war stocks - at least the ones that didn't get welded into that sculpture.

Sub Machine Gun, 9mm, C1.

A good gun.  If you never carried one, try googling "Sterling-Patchett".

Didn't come up with a pic Tom, does it look sort of like a shotgun with an aerated barrell?

I'm guessing this is it. :)

That's it...There is a separate Canadian version with minor mods...  God, I'm getting old!  :)

Roger that.  I took the question to mean "personal" (ie: with me as the CC) vice items carried in the vehicle but your answer fits the bill much better - it's been a while since I've been in a turret.  Athena should be more or less the same...  I'm not sure about 9 mm anymore - my C-8 gave me great comfort at times - being 5.56.  I do know that there was/is a project for a "personal defence weapon", but don't know much about it.

Cheers,

TR

Yep.  Old.

Our SMG was made by C.A.L. - the same guys who made the FN C1 and C2, in Long Branch (now Mississauga) Ont.  A good gun for a crewman. Also, easy to jump with, 'cause you just folded the stock and tied it to the ruck.

Tom

I have to agree with Tom.  I loved my SMG C1, (and I hate it when someone calls it a Sterling - Sterlings are what Darth Vaders Troopers carried in Star Wars).  After doing Boeselager Trg and being on the Range at least three times a week, we became quite proficient with them up to 100m.  9mm.  Easy to stripe and clean.  Simple action.  Fairly light (for its day).  10 rd and 30 rd Mags.  Compact for operating inside a Veh or moving through the brush.  Solid metal.  Yeah....I miss my SMG.

What about the pick axe handle .....no folding stock but very effective against wild boars while harboured up on fall ex

Actually, when stowed in the Trim Vane, it is easily accessable to beat off those Anti-Nuke Socialist Hippie type Protesters on Fall Ex, also.
