British Military Current Events

It's a wheeled vehicle built in the U.K. Obviously, it will have electrical problems whenever the weather turns humid.
You would think the UK would be the world leader in leakproofing, wiper and demisting technology, but you would be so very wrong....

(To be fair my 2006 Rangerover does all 3 very well, but then there are no Lucas bits in it, just Bosch)

British Army Officers

"I still remember the Royal Military Academy Sgt Major that I sat next to at a formal dinner night. I was desperate to make conversation with, so I asked if he had any advice for a young officer. He thought for a moment, pointed around the room with its candles, paintings and men and women in uniform, and said ‘this, young Sir is the best of the British Army. The tradition, the pomp, etc… but never forget, it will come at a price’. I remembered those words bitterly covered in my soldiers blood in Iraq. Being a British Army officer is a great and proud privilege, as is leading men - and you are expected, required even to lead - but it does come with a price. Proudest years of my life."

Beyond the blazing fast timeline they aim for (demonstration within 9 months of being awarded contract, then full serial production of at least 10 per month 3-6 months later), this is also a notable tidbit. A particular conflict has opened up a couple eyes.

Some components may be provided as government furnished equipment. This includes “payload, fuzes, testing ranges/facilities, support for scaling, [and] government SME (DSTL, DE&S) advice.” The MOD further noted that designs should “minimise and ideally be free from foreign government trade and usage restrictions, such as export control,” ensuring independence from non-UK suppliers and avoiding political limitations.

It looks like a V 2.

You mean all the stuff various UK governments had gutted decades before?

Armed Forces recruitment: More leaving than joining UK regulars in last year, data shows

More UK regulars left the Armed Forces than joined over a 12-month period, the latest Ministry of Defence data shows.

In the year leading up to 31 June 2025, 14,020 left the regular forces, exactly 500 more than those who joined in the same period.

The personnel statistics, released four times a year, show the British military has just over 136,000 regulars, bolstered by almost 45,000 volunteer reserves, Gurkhas and other personnel.

The MOD says there has been a rise in the number of Gurkhas, but the number of volunteer reserves has fallen, as well as regular personnel.

Looking at the outflow from the UK regulars, more than 61% left voluntarily, rather than due to time expiry or other reasons.

In the 12 months to 30 June 2025, 6,890 personnel left voluntarily. As a percentage of the average trained strength during the outflow period, the Royal Navy/Royal Marines saw a voluntary outflow rate of 5.4%, while the rate was 6.1% in the Army and 4.6% in the RAF.

The department said there is no single reason why personnel leave voluntarily, but added that the personnel who completed the Armed Forces Continuous Attitude Survey indicated the reasons included the impact of service life on family and personal life and opportunities outside the Armed Forces.

They'd be sure to want to go home if they did that ;)

Two problems solved at the same time

Move the migrants into the barracks

Move the squaddies into the hotels the government has rented for the migrants and move the NCOs and Officers into the council houses they have secured.

Migrants will want to leave.

Squaddies et al will want to stay.

Bonus - local presence is raised and pub life improves.

Taking their time about it....

Ex-sergeant major admits sexually assaulting soldier who took her own life

Royal Artillery Gunner Jaysley Beck, who was 19, was found dead in her barracks at Larkhill in Wiltshire on 15 December 2021.

She had filed a complaint against Battery Sergeant Major Michael Webber after he pinned her down and tried to kiss her at a work social event.

An inquest into Gunner Beck's death earlier this year determined the Army's handling of the complaint played "more than a minimal contributory part in her death".

Webber, who has since left the Army, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault at a pre-trial hearing last Friday. He is now awaiting sentencing.

In a statement, Gunner Beck's mother, Leighann McCready, said: "We are relieved that Michael Webber has admitted his guilt and not put us through the trauma of yet more legal proceedings, but nothing can undo the devastating loss of our beautiful daughter Jaysley."

Gunner Beck, who was originally from Oxen Park in Cumbria, reported the assault despite attempts by superiors to persuade her not to. Her mother said she had done "everything right".

"She reported the assault immediately, not once but twice."

She said the Army's chain of command had failed her daughter by not reporting the sexual assault to the police.

"If they had done that one simple thing, we believe with all our hearts she would still be with us today," she added.

Fair. Can't expect a Lord's child to be able to do math.
