CAN-led MN Bde (formerly eFP BG) Latvia Megathread

January 30, 2026 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Gunner Sebastian Halmagean, a Canadian Armed Forces member deployed on Operation REASSURANCE in Latvia and who was employed by the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia, died near Riga, Latvia, on January 29, 2026.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Gunner Halmagean’s death by the Latvian Military Police with support from the Canadian Forces Military Police is ongoing. At this time, there is no indication this incident poses an increased threat to the safety and security of our deployed members.

Gunner Halmagean was originally from Hamilton, Ontario, and was posted to the 4th Artillery Regiment (General Support), Royal Canadian Artillery, part of 6 Canadian Combat Support Brigade, which is based at 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in Oromocto, New Brunswick.

Gunner Halmagean was deployed on Operation REASSURANCE as part of the Air Defence Battery within the Multinational Artillery Battalion Group at NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia. He had served in the Canadian Armed Forces for nearly three years. This was his first overseas deployment.

Strangely I found it hard to find live coverage other then the CAF facebook page.

CHCH News was the only ones that had it live. CBC News had a camera there (you could see the logo on the side of the video sometimes) but it wasn't live.

A wise man once told us all the Canadian support for the CAF is a mile wide and one inch deep.
To be fair, during Afghanistan, there was also a not-insignificant segment of people that thought media was butting into personal business wanting to cover repatriations, too, while others said a public loss should be shared with the public. Sometimes tough to find the right spot on that dial.

There is no war in Latvia so no one is concerned. If there had been a land mine explosion or something it would have made the news. Sad in a way though I don't recall any attention being paid to the deaths of military personnel when we had troops in Germany or Cyprus. At least they carried it on Global news (that I saw) on their national edition

not something I want to see, ever but having a solid defense in Europe kept the cold war cold. Maybe we will be lucky again. 2 or more % is good insurance if it is spent on good stuff that goes bang when needed

Submarines with land attack is definitely in that category, which is why I think the Koreans will win the competition

I do believe Canada is going up and to the right axis on the defence charts, provided that PMMC can keep the ship right and tight. Open talk of nuclear weapons in the media - even if the articles are being slapped down by the MND - is a good illustration of that. The country is growing a back bone finally … but … somebody needs to explain for example if the purpose of spending billions on submarines with a land attack capability ostensibly for the purpose of defending the Arctic, that’s implicit the RCN will be directed to conduct land strikes on Canada meaning we fully expect to be fighting a war up there. Ok, fine… reconcile that with all the funding and program requirements/ aspirations of the federal government to the large urban centres who will never feel the impact of such a war because the purpose of such a war is what, exactly?
We on here know the answer, and it’s not one that will go over very well with Southern Canada electorate if they have to tone down the social spending party to pay for the defence of rocks in a far off frozen land or a foreign land like Latvia.
