CAN-USA 2025 Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

Unfortunately Kevin, I'm not so sure. I wish I could be.
Right now I don’t think it likely happen. But if Trump manages to convince enough Americans that we are the scum of the earth and he has replaced pretty much all of his top brass in the military with those who swear fealty to him, then it could and may happen. I’m convinced that he wants to invade this country, maybe even more than he wants to see Canadians peacefully want to join the U.S. but knows he couldn’t get by with it at this particular point in time. He is quite unwell mentally and wants the “joy” of knowing that people have fought and died for HIM…not necessarily the United States…but HIM. I think as time goes on, unless his powers are blunted by Congress and/or the military, his derangement will feed on previous successes and demand even more actions designed to hurt other nations and people in order to please his supporters and to secure his place as the most powerful man in American if not world history.

100% - that would be the next move by Dougie -

And, if we really really wanted to bring it up a level, Manitoba or 'insert next province name here', would announce a 25% tariff on electricity at the SAME time that Dougie cut off electricity.
Harper set the tone earlier. Scorched earth if necessary to protect our sovereignty. the Harper Doctrine. I’m claiming that now.

Ford has exposed another weakness- multiple states import electricity, not just from Ontario. It puts the lie to Trump’s bluster about ‘not needing’ anything from Canada. Trump had to go to the point of pledging to announce a national emergency over being denied a particular Canadian export. That’s not a show of strength on his part.
And I don't think everyone appreciates the extent of that weakness. One province, one surcharge, on one inelastic good created a damn near panic. The Premiers and Feds have been working together on this all along- Ford as the most belligerent is likely driving the bus on right now- but this was a limited, calculated probe/ warning shot. Nickel, Quebec electricity, Albertan O&G, Uranium, Potash. 25% surcharges on key necessities blow Miran's BS model out of the water. Trump now knows that we are in fact allowed, and willing, to do things that don't follow the script.

How us suspending the 25% energy tariff (or whatever it was) after saying we won't until all US tariffs are dropped not blinking? Ford just went back on his word, no?
I think he’s negotiating and trading with Lutnik (and probably having backbriefed Carney and some/all of the other Premiers) and acting as Canada’s vanguard dealing with Team MAGA. If anyone has blinked, let recall back to when the US tariffs were imposed on Canada and Mexico on 1 Feb….oh, wait…

Like any good hockey team, you need a few brawlers.

The parallels with the 1930s are frightening.

On Broadway the current revival of Cabaret is getting a combination of gasps, and inappropriate applause.

It would be hard to beat the original ;)

Dance Film GIF by unpeuflou
I saw a touring company in Toronto in '98 or '99, going in not knowing the story.

The finale scene of the first act. The dance with the gorilla. The final scene.

Properly done, the entire show is all about seduction and betrayal.

And I now know how seductive a pineapple can be...
