CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

The Canadian sub on reddit is making it seem like Smith showed up at Trumps door with all the base access codes and hand drawn maps where to invade.

What did Smith actually propose to Trump?

Nothing. She represented her people as a good Premier should.

People are simply pearl clutching because she's from Alberta and not Canada's all knowing all seeing center, she's a conservative, and her province actually has something to offer the US. And it scares the crap out of them.

If we make it through this we need to fix the divisions in our country and that means pulling power from Ont/Que and spreading it out equally.

Like any statement from any politician, where we weren't at the meeting, we can never know, or we can only guess - maybe something in between, maybe something we can't even guess at. All depends on how much you trust the politician talking ;)

Lots of people are speculating in the other direction. Someone has to even the keel

The naive optimist in me likes to guess (as a starting point, anyway) something in between the extremes, but that usually works better in areas where I know more about the granular details of what can & can't be done.

No. She’s went and showed her hand and even threatened the country instead of working in unison. And she did it publicly. Harper, Kenney and Ford basically came out to counter that.

What did she say to threaten the country?

And she is the only one of the premiers that had a chance to personally ask Trump what he meant, what his intentions are are what is his preferred course of action. Is that useful information for Doug Ford and the premiers?

That info is certainly good. Publicly declaring a unity crisis if Canada exercises certain options is not.

She publicly declared that using certain options (in this case cutting off energy supply) would start a unity crisis.

That was not helpful.

Why does her concern have to be Canadian unity ?

Her first concern should be her people and their prosperity. I don't think she wants Albertans or their economy used as pawns by Eastern Canada. I think its fair play.

It doesn't have to be binary, though. And as you're seeing with some of the comments, to use a phrase sometimes used in the military, it's interesting to see her triage regarding loyalty up and loyalty down here. Can't blame her for pushing hard for her own team, but are there ways to do that without causing problems for the league?

I mean how awesome has the rest of Canada been to Alberta ?

I don't fault the underlying bitterness coming from the west. A good chunk of Canada's economy and many of our provinces depend on what Alberta produces, and I think Canada would be wise to remember that.

I tend to believe Canada needs Alberta, but Alberta doesn't need Canada.

i thought you were a country before self kind of guy. Should I strike that from your past postings on that?

Nothing wrong with that. But she doesn’t have to air out for our adversaries to take advantage of. That’s what she did.

I’m not knocking her for trying to appeal to trump or look out out for her province but her way of doing it doesn’t help.

And vice versa.

doesn’t justify being anti Canadian.

It certainly did to get where it is. But hey let’s conveniently forget that.

Well said.

Again, she's Alberta first; I can appreciate why feels that way.

Hey, its Canada's job to show Alberta why is valuable to the rest of the country. Alberta is certainly contributing its fair share.

Fail to do that and this is where it gets you.

I want want Canada to make it through this, with Alberta. But I also think this has shown some real weaknesses in our unity and we need to work on that.

She's decidedly less a provincial leader and basically just provincial.
She's playing to her base in hopes of improving her position.
Welcome to modern Canadian politics . Where nothing outside your riding ,your province and or the Country could possibly be all that important.
Just ignore the world it will go away eventually.

None of that justifies sabotaging (intentionally or not) your own side.
