CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

Who knows…these may still be on the menu?

Counter-tariffs, dollar-for-dollar could include export tariffs on things that the U.S. “doesn't need.” Federal rebates to the exporter upon collection of the export tariffs by CBSA. Maybe even a smattering of Treasuries sell off…

Well... he did extend the deadline conveniently up until the weekend, when trading stops.

A different take on the cause of the collapse from the American side:

“Despite the US offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market, new demands and walk-backs of other commitments by Canada have upended the careful balance reached in the past days,” US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told reporters on a press call shortly before midnight, the Associated Press reported.

The tariffs that are now going into effect are relatively limited in scope, covering about $20 billion worth of goods imported from Canada — roughly 5% of the total value of goods imported to the US from its northern neighbor last year.

On their own, they are unlikely to meaningfully impact American consumers, who are already getting squeezed by higher gas prices.
The greater issue is the trade war it is starting.”

So who to believe. Certainly not Team Carney. As inferentially pointed out by CNN, Canada isn’t relevant anymore to the US economy. Yes there’s a trade war, but they’ll replace Canada within months.

“Down” to 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum inside a quota isn’t “best treatment of any major exporter to [the U.S.]…” That would have been 10 to 15% like Japan, UK, Europe…even the penguins were treated better.

For the record. It was the Americans blowing up the deal that was being discussed by trying to pull a last minute fast one... again.

Bring on the November midterms bloodbath.

However, that progress has not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians. As a result, this evening, I have decided to suspend trade negotiations with the U.S. and have directed Canada’s negotiators to return to Ottawa. They have worked hard, in good faith, to defend the interests of Canadians throughout these negotiations up until the very last minute. However, last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.

If we were irrelevant they wouldn't be crying about the lack of imports

Both sides are claiming last minute changes by the other side. Carney has too much to gain by blowing this up. Trump on the other hand thrives in chaos and bullying. Both are completely narcissistic liars. I don’t blame Team Carney for walking, but I don’t blame Team Trump for not really trying with us. Both sides are about as useful as a sun tan lotion in a snow storm.

Team Carney are far more believable than Team Trump.

I have a feeling Lutnick took the auto tariff relief off the table last second. He's been vocal about wanting to destroy that industry here in Canada entirely, he was also the one who it was reported yesterday that wasn't happy with the deal that was being worked on.

“The U.S. offer was also forward-looking and included a historic economic and national security partnership to cooperate on export controls, combat transshipment, enhance digital trade, and align certain external tariffs,” Greer said in the statement.

Sounds like they were also trying to rope us into a kind of customs union with them. Perhaps even if it was just talk the mere thought of Canada being accepted into the EU or short of that, the EUCU (yes, non-EU members can join that) was starting to make people sweat a little.

Good. A pox on their house.

We are not their little puppet nation, strong armed into doing their bidding or aligning everything we do with them.
