Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

The WWII equivalent went from 4x .50cals to twin 20mm

Canada could be working on cheap SHORAD systems, it would be well within our capabilities and supply them to Ukraine and then improving them with feedback. Mount some them on Roshel products for a complete Canadian package.
Israeli modification to the M 45 Maxon mount.
A cost effective improvement on the original quad .50. caliber.

Canada screwed itself in deciding where to build and/or retain larger training areas by removing them too far from major population centres.

🍻

I would agree if you had said that we have screwed ourselves by physically distancing our RegF units from the nation’s major population centres, mainly for convenient access to training areas.

This has likely had unrecoverable political ramifications as we’ve condemned much of the CAF to a life of eternal - and internal - exile, then wonder why the civilian population doesn’t ’get us’.

There’s alot to be learned from Mao and his fish analogy ;)

Because FN of late tends to be long on claims, and thin on deliveries.

The M2 is a has been item anyway.

The GAU-19 is a better way to do .50 these days. I specially with soft mounts and RWS systems that can take advantage of ammunition selection options, and different rates of fire setting for different targets.

A single or double 25 or 30mm cannon with a FCS and radar is really all you need especially for counter drone. Make it palitized so any LVM-H or mack truck can become a CUAS vehicle.

Pickup trucks are adequate.

30x113mm Bushmaster on an American RWS
30x113mm Bushmaster on an Australian RWS with EO and Radar
12.7mm M2 on a Ukrainian RWS with EO, Radar and AI.

....

These I consider to be local, or point defense systems. They can travel with any forces, including foot-borne forces, to supply a local, last-ditch umbrella against UAS. That is why I talk about them being available at the company level given that the company seems to be compatible with the dispersed battlefield. And if those then the VAMPIRE 70mm system can be integrated at the company level as well. Do the gunners have to be wearing infantry cap badges? I don't care. But if a company is going to be swanning around on its own, or tasked to secure an isolated VP then I would think you would want a C-UAS system accompanying it. The fact that those same weapons systems can engage secondary targets, or be employed in other defensive plans seems to me to be a useful bonus.

The Oerlikon 30x173s and 35s, the Bofors 40s and 57s, the Leonardo 76s together with the various missile systems are a different issue entirely. Arty without question (except when RCN, or possibly RCAF).

I note that the Stinger ManPAD is a 70mm weapon and thus an "infantry weapon".

They have a version already. I'm sure it could be refined.

Here's one with dual GSh-23s that was pitched to the Ukrainians. With enough time and moolah, I'm sure they could adapt that to something western. Unsure if it has a radar built-in.View attachment 93951
Put a single 35mm on it, with a FCS, and you have a cheap solution, even the current ARes could use it.

Will it take a 35mm? (1050 m/sec 550-750 g)
30mm x 173mm (1050 m/sec 360 g)
30mm x 113mm (800 m/sec 250 g)
12.7mm (800 m/sec 45 g)

30x113 seems to be the preferred upgrade to the M2/M3 HB as still within the limits of the lower classes of RWS .

Further to

The Rheinmetall Oerlikon Millennium Gun, a close-in weapon system (CIWS), has a gun weight of 450 kg (992 lbs) and an installation weight of 3,300 kg (7,275 lbs). The installation includes the gun itself, mount, and ammunition.

I doubt if a pickup would get the job done.

Somewhere out there, there is a vehicle pool full of TAPV's that just spit out their coffee & are laughing hysterically at that last part... 😉

The Bushmaster III weighs 480 pounds by itself, it should be possible to build a solo mount for a technical.

Almost sounding like done deal, if no hiccups between now and the 23rd.

Perhaps this is how carney intends on meeting his 2% NATO plan. Join a loan program and buy on credit, with the EU as the mortgage holder.
