Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

A Facebook rebuttal to an article that cannot be posted here. It seems to do a good job explaining why our Type-26s have AEGIS and not CMS-330.

Royal Canadian Navy Today and Yesterdays Post, 05 Dec 2025
It is sad that so much of the discourse has devolved into "America bad!!!" clickbait headlines to draw people in, you see this across mainstream and amateur media circles. Anti-Americanism is rampant and overly patriotic/under informed Canadian seem more than willing to cut off their own legs at the knees just for a chance to spite the Americans.

Point of clarification, CMS330 COULD do BMD; just no one's asked for it to be configured that way with the appropriate weapons and sensors. CMS330 is a better system than AEGIS, in my opinion. The choice to go with AEGIS was simply because it is a proven system, along with weapons proven to work with it, so that the certification process would be much much simpler (which is true). But, I'm convinced that if required CMS330 could do it, and more, it just would take a while to flesh out the bugs and certify it for use, putting on time project delivery at risk.

Ordinarily, in today’s environment we might be tempted to say we don’t have time to flesh out system bugs.
But with the RCD the RCN really does seem to be laser focused on avoiding any of that anyway.

I agree. Keeping CMS330 going in the CDC's is a good idea I think. It continues to evolve, with a HFX version (NZ and Chile sub versions, JSS version, AOPS version (CCG sub version). The RCD will have a version, and that subversion will be taken up by the Germans for their AAW Frigate, with HFX class subversions for the rest of the German fleet.

With enough time and money, you can make almost anything do anything.

A toaster is just a death ray with a smaller power source.
Just like every machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

Hasn't this been the norm for decades south of us and we Canadian's are merely playing catch up now?

We JUST had an election that was won on exactly those premises. It stands to reason working up the population in that kind fever will have have consequences.

Of course its not.

I'm sure you're aware of who the UEL were. It's been alive and well here even longer than them if you're a Quebecoise of pur laine. Not sure why people get worked up about this, its always been here and it always will be.
The difference is instead of being something that largely sat on the sidelines and in the backs of peoples heads, it's now on full display and constantly pushed around in the media. It has absolutely poisoned the well of reasonable discussion in many places, with people falling back on very emotional points and making some frankly embarrassing/out of touch points. I hope this derangement does not seep over into Government.

Yes, 100% true.
The lunacy that goes on minute by minute down south of the border certainly doesn't make things any easier on having rational discussions here.
Frankly I don't see how this can or will change. I'm going to speculate, but as time goes on and Trump's final months draw closer, things will get even wilder.

We have raised a couple of generations now, to emote, to express their feelings. A phlegmatic response that emphasised rational debate and logic has been discouraged since Kirk and McCoy mocked Spock.

Today our entire discourse is wrapped around not hurting people's feelings. Or appealing to their feelings.

We are great at ginning up flash mobs on a moment's notice.

Its not just us, a 'flash mob' can be conjured up just about anywhere in the world now.
