Why did China hack the world’s phone networks?

Salt Typhoon breached dozens of telecoms around the world

Chinese hackers have breached dozens of telecommunications companies around the world. The breach, christened Salt Typhoon by Microsoft cybersecurity researchers, has afforded the cybercriminals unprecedented access not only to information on who has been texting or calling whom and when, but also on the contents of some messages, a much higher technical bar to clear in a cyber-attack.

The cyber-attack hit three of the largest telecommunications networks in the US. The communications of government officials in Washington DC have been intercepted, as have internet browsing records kept by the same telecommunications companies. The hackers attempted and may have succeeded to crack the phones of Donald Trump and JD Vance as well as Kamala Harris’s campaign staff. Even the US’s wiretapping program was breached; call records stored there were stolen. A US senator called it the “worst telecom hack in our nation’s history”. The same week, UK telecom giant BT announced it had endured “an attempt to compromise” its conferencing service and circumvented it.

The group of hackers, sometimes known as FamousSparrow, has been active since 2020 and has gone after government organizations in Israel, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Canada, Guatemala and Burkina Faso in the past, according to cybersecurity firm Eset. It has another favorite target, one it has targeted even more aggressively than governments in the past: hotels. In all of those countries as well as the UK, France, Lithuania and Taiwan, the group has hounded the digital systems of hotels and stolen their data.

Salt Typhoon has been under way for one to two years and is ongoing, according to US intelligence. US analysts have attributed the cyber-attack to Beijing, as have independent cybersecurity researchers. China denies involvement.

There were a number of young, male East Asians on my particular group touring HMCS Harry deWolf (which is not at all surprising given the ethnic mix in Toronto) and like most people were taking pictures of the many interesting parts of the ship along the tour. I did however find it curious when one of them was taking pictures of the electrical panels in the passageways. Perhaps an electrical engineering student? Simply a photo fanatic that reinforces the picture-taking stereotype of Asian tourists?

I can't imagine that any useful information could possibly be gathered from an electrical panel that had nothing more than a Siemens nameplate and a Voltage/Amperage rating on it, but given everything else you hear about Chinese information gathering efforts it does kind of make you go hmmmm.
Question - does one have to provide government issued photo id to tour His CDN Majesty’s Warships and the individuals info is electronically captured and stored?

I am not well versed in the number of ethnicities in China. I do know that the Mongols eventually became the rulers of China at some point but beyond that.....

He might mean birthrates and such.

I think this is very much a money quote:

How very Sun Tzu.

The Chinese exercise was the first of this scale with no notice. It was not accompanied by the normal level of CCP propaganda associated with major PLA exercises around Taiwan. This is probably the beginning of a Chinese campaign to not only condition the West - and its neighbours - to large scale Chinese exercises but for large scale activities with no warning.

The aim of conducting these kinds of major activities without notice is to normalise them so that at some point in the future, the Chinese have the option of rapidly transitioning one of these events from an exercise to an actual military operation. This could be a blockade, or something more serious, against Taiwan.
