Couple of thoughts - JMacLeod is right - it was a gutsy move. However everytime someone calls the Liberals "lieberals" or "fiberals" it reduces respect for politicians and our process.
Another thought - everyone who calls Belinda Stronach a whore, or a dingbat, should receive emails, phone calls and letters from their constituents. Maybe even from non-constituents. I sent a few off last night. This is unacceptable behaviour. Again - dilutes our respect for the process and politicians.
Final thought - We should stop bashing regional differences. Sure Alberta has lots of oil revenue. They were "net removers" for decades and decades. Now they are net contributers. So what? That's the point behind confederation, in my opinion. Same for my old Nova Scotia home. The Feds ignored us for years. When primary resources declined, they did nothing for us to help. The dire straits of the maritime provinces is a direct result of federal ignorance. So now the Atlantic provinces have an opportunity for oil revenue and a chance to become net contributers - excellent!!! maybe now some natural gas can actually stay in Halifax! >
The media is a major perpetuator of disrespect and rumour. How many of you get queasy when Peter Mansbridge in a commercial tells us "we'll tell you what's important in your news day" or "we'll tell you what it all means"... Jeez - I CAN think for myself. I mean I was a grunt, but hey Pete - I CAN think. I think they have a huge burden in this, and I am not sure how we overcome this....
Western alienation, Central alienation, Eastern Alienation .... They've all figured prominently in the media lately. Remember "let those eastern bastards freeze in the dark"? Most of us laughed it off as hyperbole. The media didn't and made a HUGE point of playing parts of our country off against each other. So what are they playing up now to sell papers/commercials.....
What can I say - they still operate with "if it bleeds, it leads"...
