I was wondering if anyone can comment on the current demand/need for NES OPs?  As far as I know, I have been merit listed, so just trying to get an idea of how long of a wait I should expect (I know it can take months sometimes).

Current published requirement for NESOPs for fiscal year 06/07 is zero.  That may change in the future.

hmmm... perhaps I should consider a second choice.  I have always been interested in the NCI OP trade as well, any major difference in availability/demand?

before I get shot for not searching first, I have read kincanucks post a while back saying that there "was" positions available.... any updates?

Actually there were no positions available in this list:

http://forums.army.ca/forums/threads/40717.0.html

which was posted 08 Mar 06 and there are none for NCI OP or Sonar  OP or Nav Comm.

I noticed that there was no Nav Comm positions on that list and a friend of mine was offered a Nav Comm position last month and is doing his BMQ now.  I also noticed on some posts in the Navy section of the forum some users have mentioned that Naval recruits are in demand.  Would anyone agree that positions like NES Ops and NCI Ops are probably in demand dispite the omittance on the "list"?

It's more complex than that.  The schools may be full at the moment, they may be taking a cycle or two off, maybe there aren't quite enough instructors, or maybe they are going to be implementing the amalgamated "ops room trade" right away here - which would blow my mind, that happening so fast.

A LOT of junior operators have been run through in the past five years or so, and I believe I saw in the last issue of The Matelot that all ops trades are currently in the black, if only barely (and maybe nominally) so.  I can count the number of west coast LS to MS and better promotions for all three trades on one hand this year, which also indicates a good stock of people in the system.

well, I guess that would defeat the purpose of me adding NCI OP as my second choice then.  But good to know, thanks for the info guys.

According to the recent MOSART brief Common Operator is coming fast.

Man I can't see it happening that fast.  There are a number of pretty big issues that I haven't heard solutions for yet, like, how is the Combat Division going to be organized now?  Just add a "Junior Operator" section, or reorganize the whole thing?  Let alone coming up with a standard QSP that all three current trades can agree on providing a good basic familiarization with the jobs.

My guess is that right now they're only relieving the clog at the pre-QL5 level in the trades right now.  Sonar, at least, is hugely backed up for QL5A courses; there are guys 2 and 2 1/2 years post QL4 just going on a 5A course now and there's little relief in sight.  I imagine the other two trades are similar.  Pumping new guys into a slow moving training environment isn't too good.

S McPhee, apply for what you want.

Do you mean the common operator system would eliminate you putting NCIOP as your second choice?

No, I will still add NCI OP as my second choice.  I was more thinking that if they combine the trades into one "junior operator" label, that my two choices (NES OP and NCI OP) would then become one.

From what I understand about the trades, I think I would be happy working in the operations room period.  I just hope that it doesn't take too long for some positions to open up.

shit that really blows my mind, I hope the trade isn't close, I'm going for my interview today in about 20 minutes....

I hope I'll get more information at that point

Hey Collin. T,

If you find anything out let me know.  My local recruiting center told me that they "anticipate" that there will be NES OP positions filled in this current fiscal year, but that was about as specific as they would get.

Well I just got back a few minutes ago, and indeed the trade is closed and I think they expect 0 opening for the next fiscal year, but that it being changed about every month or so depending on how many member they lose or expect to lose (good news since NES op is one of the trade with the highest attrition rate) so on the 3rd of april or so they will either re open the trade for X number or maybe just for transfer etc etc depends on your status (I am transfering), the demands for the trade are going to be reviewed every month or so. Not much more about it all...

if you get more news on your side please let me know too.
