Couldn't answer someone's question and the DND recruiting webpage makes me want to eat my own face so I figured ask here.

Is an EOD tech an actual trade or is it a course that someone takes?

If it's a course, what all trades are qilling to qualify someone as an EOD tech or employ them as such?
Engineer, Ammo tech?

What exactly is an EOD tech where do they come from and how are they work?

Thanks

In the CF EOD is not a trade, in the US military it is so some people may get their information crossed.

In the CF AVN (I think...what ever Air Weapons morphed into), Ammo Tech, Clearance Diver, and Engineer can take the various EOD courses.  Depending on the courses you have taken (and they are for the most part progressive), you will be qualified to dispose of little more than a dud grenade to full up bio/chem IED disposal.  That's about all that should be in the open.

Of course any RSO running a grenade range should be able to dispose of  dud grenade, and that in theory, is EOD...

That's why you must have an Engineer on standby to run a grenade range. Not too many RSOs out there are qualified and current.

Fixed for Pet...  ;D Engineers are thinner on the ground than we are it seems, at least ones can dispose of grenades.

Seriously, there is very little reason for an RSO not to be current on all aspects of running a range.  Poor planning is not a reason.

As an RSO, I will say that it is not that easy to get qualified and stay current on disposing of grenades.  As an infantry soldier to get the qualification you must do the basic demolition instructors course (BDIC) which is not run very often then you must stay current.  It is not that easy to stay current as we do not use explosives very often.

dangerboy,

You are correct, I should have checked the references.  It would appear that in the last few years the ability to train RSOs how to make a basic charge and dispose of a grenade in house has been taken away.  It was either B-GL-381 or the dud disposal manual that gave permission and small schedule of what had to be taught and who could teach it.  Think it was two days.
Wonder why that is?

Basically what I was getting at, regardless of trade. Even when we had Assault Troops in the Regiments it almost took an act of Geebus to get someone loaded on a basic demo course who would more than likely only use it on a range.
