Future Wars: Is Germany ready for war?

Russia's invasion of Ukraine put Europe on alert and made the continent's biggest economy rethink its military spending. The German military has faced years of cuts, downsizing, and struggles to recruit from a largely anti-war populace. So how is Germany now getting battle-ready?

Well, that's kind of the point of conscription...

German military service reform triggers major youth protests

“The problem I have with it is that it shouldn’t be forced on anyone,” says one 17-year-old protester in central Berlin.

BERLIN — School students across Germany skipped class Friday to demonstrate against the government reform on military service.

On Friday, the German parliament approved a legal change requiring all 18-year-old men to fill in a questionnaire about their fitness and willingness to serve in the military. For women, the questionnaire will remain voluntary.

As part of the reform, the governing coalition also agreed to reinstate mandatory medical examinations starting for men born in 2008 onward. If the military fails to meet its recruitment targets for voluntary service, a portion of those examined could be called up after a separate Bundestag vote.

Only if they are starting it.😉

Interesting that the law isn’t applied evenly across sex in Germany.

An ongoing debate in European countries...

Why are women not obliged to serve in the armed forces?

One post online implies women are being purposefully excluded from the German armed forces, or Bundeswehr; others that Germany is forcing women into the military; and some which frame it as a failure of feminism that the movement has not pushed to make joining a requirement for women.

So, why aren't women, like men, obliged to register for Germany’s armed forces?

In short, it's because the German constitution doesn’t allow it — at least not yet.

Article 12a of Germany's Basic Law says that men may "be required to perform service in the armed forces, the Federal Border Guard or a civil defence organisation from the age of eighteen." Women are not included in this requirement.

They are not, however, excluded from joining — they are just not legally required to do so.
