Iran Super Thread- Merged

All the more reason for everyone else to avoid it like the plague. Last thing anyone needs is to get tied up in another forever war for a decade or two again.
so how does the rest of the world clear the strait without supporting the U.S. actions? And it is becoming increasingly clear that other nations are going to have to do something as their economies can't survive without fuel.

US actions closed the strait to begin with.

I think that other nations want them accountable for that.

The US could start by removing tariffs and taking a bit more of a conciliatory tone with those it wants to come rescue them.

Other nations will just cut a deal with Iran and pay the toll to get their ships through.

Western world depends on oil. Letting "Death to America/Death to the West" Iran control the world's oil flow isn't a great idea. We need to either get oil without Iran as the middle man, or, remove them as the middle man.

This is how far out of touch with reality Trump and his cabinet is right now.

Trump says Iran let 10 oil ships through Strait of Hormuz as a 'present' to U.S.
Trump says Iran let 10 oil ships through Strait of Hormuz as a 'present' to U.S.

Trump says that Iran ‘gave the US a gift of 10 oil tankers’ going through the strait of Hormuz this WEEK.
As a point of reference over 150 ships A DAY go through there, over just over 1,000 ships a week.
Allowing 10 to go through is 1% of tie weekly total.

EDIT: Unreal that the reporter decides NOT to give any reference as to how many ships typically cross the strait daily or weekly. The reporter makes an obvious choice to not report on that to put context to the number of 10 ships.
THAT's the "Very Big Present" worth "a tremendous amount of money" that Iran gave to Trump??? Letting tankers supplying oil to non-US aligned nations pass through the Straits while still preventing US-allied ships to go through? Were they containing Iranian oil which would help fund the Iranian regime? Wow...this is some wild 4-D chess that Trump is playing!

I was hoping for another 747 ;)

Wild that Iran can - while getting absolutely pounded - mostly effectively close an international strait and deny innocent passage through same, and force shipping (that it so allows) on a toll basis through its internal waters. And that this can be seen as anything but a major strategic blunder.

The rest of the developed world may indeed have to part of cleaning up this mess, but only because those who made it can’t or won’t.

Turns out Douhet was wrong... which we've known for awhile now:

Seventy-five years of praying at the altar of Giulio Douhet—the god of strategic bombing—has proved worthless. We assess bombing theory and practice analytically, and develop a new model for the future.

Consequence of having one side that mostly follows the rules, and one that doesn't, and insufficient penalties for the one that doesn't.

The other side can deny traffic that provides any benefit to Iran, if it wants to.

I have little doubt that they could easily drop 50-100 mines into the water in a few hours if they decided

It does
It has the 4th largest reserves and it’s the 4th largest exporter.
Which some believe means that Canada’s O&G commercial businesses should not act like the businesses they are, and provide oil at sub-market discounted rates for our own use.

Just vote in a Federal NDP government and see if they try to push this through...

UAE potentially lost one or more Global Eye resulting from a drone strike on a hangar at Al Dhafra. It might explain why they have become hyper angry with Iran yesterday.

USAF may have lost Tritons and Reapers in same strike, but there is zero confirmation (and probably never will be):

Very few if any companies are going to risk running an IRCG blockade - the fact that doesn't appear to have been a plan put in place for this is pretty concerning. (We know there are various plans for pretty much everything under the sun, so it appears the Administration went ahead without bother to either ask about them, or if briefed on them, they certainly where not implemented.

Isreal probably ignored a lot of this in their calculus, as they don't rely on oil through the SoH.
Now I suspect they expected the US to ensure the free flow of oil through the Strait as global pricing will effect them.

Short of very non capitalist market controls to decouple North America from the global oil market - one has to wonder what the Administration has planned.

And for some levity

Given that “Iran doesn’t follow the rules” was one of the predicates for this entire war, and given how utterly predictable closures of the straits been, the abject failure to adequately plan for and safeguard against this is inexcusable. There’s no way the U.S. military didn’t anticipate and plan for this eventuality, so there was a profound decision making failure somewhere in the senior executive.
