Last tour to Bosnia?

Yep that rumor was floating around but untrue. Operation Palladium is planned to go up to atleast roto 18, which is intended to be a full reserve battle group.

I heard that Roto 13 would be skipped because it‘s bad luck.. Anyone know if that‘s true or not?

Gents, the army wants out of Bosnia desparately, but it is a political decision to do so. Although we are planning to be there for the foreseeable future (take a look at ATOF!), the government could cut our commitment at any time.

I was told the next will be 25% ,then 50% then may be 75% reserve.

The question is can we get the reseve‘s to commit and fill these roto‘s also the specialty trade‘s i.e. constuction trade‘s ,heavy equipment within the engineer‘s.

As to the other trade‘s I have no idea what‘s needed.

I‘ll check around and get back.

Roto 16 is planned to be 100% reservist as of now.But the same apply‘s for trade‘s.

Just confirmed.

High hopes...
There will never be a 100% Reserve BG tour. I doubt if the Reserves will even be able to sustain any more that three tours of just a company. They even had to recruit from the East to fill the two PPCLI BG that are in progress now...

The plan as it currently stands is to generate light patrol vehicle (Iltis) companies for roto 11-14 (LFWA, LFWA, LFCA and SQFT respectively). Roto 15 - 17 (LFWA, LFWCA and SQFT respectively) would see the generation of a Reserve LAV III Coy. Roto 18 (also LFWA) would see a Reserve Battle Group. This is simply CLS guidance, there are numberous obstacles to overcome before it would come to fruition (namely money). Any of the regs know exactly how costly it is to train a soldier (Gunner) on LAVIII.

No the reservists can‘t fill the Battle Group by themselves. Reserve CSS are not compatible with their Regular counterparts, there are limited engineer assets in the Reserves and moreover there are some trades that simply don‘t exist in the Reserves (I‘m thinking everything from LCIS Tech, MAT Tech, Vertical construction trades, etc.)

Question is, Why deploy a Reserve Battle Group? Does it make sense resource wise? With the reduction that have occurred in Bosnia, the army is capable of fielding a the Bosnia TO&E as it stands now.

Anyone?

I think that the only way the reserves will sustain tours anywhere is through job protection legislation. They could work it the same way as maternity leave. Give the reservist a year off and protect the job. If push comes to shove, call out one of the reserve brigade groups for the tour. I still believe that if you wear the uniform, you should be willing to do the job at home or overseas.

Gunner, i‘m not sure what some of those abbrivations mean but you seem like a pretty smart guy so i‘m going to agree with you :)

I don‘t think job legistlation would work simply because people fear change and new things, i can see a boss seeing that someone is in the reserves and thinking "humm, what is all that job legistlation crap about? Is he going to leave for whatever and i have to hold his job? im gonna just hire the next guy"

I don‘t think the reserves will be able to field much more then a company. Roto 13 is set to leave in sept/october of 2003. Full time work up training starts in May. Reserve soldiers have to take off 5 straight months for training (in adition to the 6 month tour). in adition to that there was pre-work up training which started in october that just passed. Reserve soldiers who want to go on tour have to make specific training dates (a year before they deploy) if they miss one of these week-ends their pretty much off the list. (If you ask me theres no requirement for this, it‘s all done in the work up trainign with the regs).
On top of that, from now until deployment lots of the soldiers are going to change their mind, decide not to goto bosnia because of this or that. I was chatting with a guy who told me that because of the other soldiers int he platoon (he doesnt like them) that he doesnt want to goto bosnia anymore but he‘ll still do some pre-work up training for the cash.
Thats a mentality that will really work against the reserves staying together (for lack of a better word) all the way until the end. people can, and will, quit when they want. (Uhhh i got a better job, my parents dont want me to go, my girlfriend said she would dump me if i go)

I agree that it sucks that reservists can cut out at anytime but think about this. Would you want a reservist going that really doesn‘t want to. You have to remember that most reservists don‘t have full time positions so a lot of their thought process is still geared to civilian life. For regular force members it is their jobs to go on tours (still have their stress family wise), for resrevists this is extra duties that may put a large strain on their civilian jobs. Reg Mbrs go back to Battalion when they get back but Pres go back to civi jobs...what if when they were gone their boss decided that they were expendable and terminated him? Pres mbrs would be sol. Unfortunately every topic has two sides that have valid points. If I was to cover all that I can think for or against (both sides) I would be here all night. This is a post to try and clear the air between Pres and Reg mbrs. :)

"Would you want a reservist going that really doesn‘t want to."

Much of what i see, reservests often bend over backwards trying to get ON a tour and reg force members bend over backwards to get off a tour.

Obviously thats not all reg force members and while the ones im refering to dont complain about it, when i spoke with them‘d rather stay at home with their families. And why not, they‘ve been on a tour before (usually) so its not very novel to them, plus they do that stuff day in and day out, with reserves its a chance in a life time.

I believe that once you sign on the dotted line you are committed. You are now a full time soldier; forget about Res or Reg...just full time. Once that is done, there is no backing out (unless for real emergencies). If there is a chance that you might lose your job, wife leave you or other issues, you should not even consider putting in your application for a tour. There are a lot of guys that go over that didn‘t want to go, or changed their mind once they got there. Before you decide to go, you should think long and hard about it. Be 100% sure, because if you are not sure, you’re just taking a job away from a guy that wants to and can go.

Just another point, I never heard that there would ever be 100% reserve tours. I heard about tours that would be a majority reserve with the remainder being reg.

Well, the reserves do have a time comitment of sorts.. For a year after we leave the reserves, we‘re placed in the secondary reserve, so we can be called up if sh*t hits the fan. And I‘m sure we all know how well the reserve call-up procedures have been planned out. :D

You say that the Army wants to pull out of Bosnia, Gunner.. I just heard the report of the senators recomendation to call back ALL Canadian personnel from overseas within 6 months for a 2 year overhaul of the CF... Interesting, to say the least.
