Lawyers Allegedly Behaving Badly

Don't fail to file before the statute of limitations runs out.

Don't forge your client's signature.

Don't falsify a notarization.

Don't cash the settlement and never tell your client.

And definitely don't do all that for $6,500.

Good proposed sentence. No doubt a long-term and costly impact. One wonders what her motivation was.

Not harsh enough. Innocent people could be sitting in jail directly as a result of her gross negligence as well as guilty people being free. To me this is capital punishment worthy.

Reading the article it seems at least one of her motivations was laziness. Never underestimate the amount of effort some will put into avoiding doing their job. Oftentimes it is more effort than actually just doing the job.

Disturbing Details Emerge In Ottawa Family Annihilation Case

Ottawa police have identified 40-year-old dentist Mohammed Al-Lami as the man believed to have killed his seven and 12-year-old sons inside his Findlay Creek home before setting fire to his dental clinic in a nearby village and later dying by suicide in a vehicle fire. The investigation remains ongoing, and police say they are supporting the boys’ mother, who has asked that their names not be made public.

The case has taken on added significance after newly obtained court recordings revealed Al-Lami had been convicted just months earlier of threatening his ex-wife. The charges stemmed from a January 2024 email sent during an ongoing dispute over child support, in which he wrote that he would kill people around her, leave her permanently disabled, and make her “a worldwide story.” He also referenced taking revenge through child support payments and made violent threats toward her current partner.

At trial, Al-Lami represented himself and refused to work with court-appointed counsel assigned to cross-examine his ex-wife. She testified that although he had made threatening remarks throughout their relationship, they had usually been indirect. This email was different because of its graphic and explicit nature. She told the court she ultimately contacted police because she feared what could happen to her and worried about who would care for their children if he acted on his threats. She also revealed that Al-Lami had stopped paying child support after sending the email.

Despite being offered the opportunity to resolve the case through a one-year peace bond that would have avoided a criminal record, Al-Lami rejected the offer. He chose not to testify, call evidence, or make any arguments in his own defence. The trial judge openly questioned why he had proceeded to trial without presenting any defence at all.

During sentencing, Crown prosecutors argued that Al-Lami showed no remorse, no insight into his behaviour, and no acceptance of responsibility. They requested 18 months of supervised probation, mandatory participation in an intimate partner violence intervention program, and a DNA order, citing concerns about his future conduct.

The judge instead imposed a conditional discharge and 12 months of probation without requiring him to report regularly to a probation officer or complete treatment programming. In delivering the sentence, the judge acknowledged the written threats were serious but said he was not convinced Al-Lami actually intended to carry them out. He concluded by expressing hope that Al-Lami would continue his career, remain involved in his children’s lives, and move forward following the divorce.

Those comments have since taken on a tragic significance in light of what police now believe unfolded on Monday. Investigators continue to examine the sequence of events, including the deaths of the two boys, the fire at Al-Lami’s dental office, and his own death, while many questions remain about whether earlier intervention could have prevented the tragedy.

Realistically, going fully with the sentence requested by crown likely wouldn’t have changed a thing. Someone sufficiently radicalized by his hatred and entitlement to be a family annihalator isn’t gonna be redeemed by some group therapy.

Fuck that guy and what he did to his family. What a selfish, pathetic little person.

You'r eprobably right however It would have still been better than what the judge went with IMO. Ideally enough redflags should have been checked off to have FCS step in or some kind of process to limit him from unsupervised access to his children.

That's a weird response when you look at the totality of what this guy did, his behaviour in the court room, and basically threatening to become a family annihalator. Which he did. The judge said he didn't think he would make good on the threats. I don't think the guy could have been anymore clear he would.
