Liberal Minority Government 2021 - ????

Well there was also McKay using a SAR chopper to pick him up from a fishing trip, two contempt of parliament rulings by the speaker in 2011, Afghan detainee scandal, robo call scandal after the 2011 election, and lets not forgot a lawyer for the government at the time saying they had no obligation to veterans, among other things. No government is ever innocent we just chose to ignore somethings.

I know right, the good old days before PMs in blackface and Nazis in the HoC.

And the carbon tax which apparently no one supports any more.

I love the fake outrage some have when it comes to things like that.

Outrage can only last so long. People have a finite attention span and life continues.

What's key it to remember things and make sure you think of all the good and all the bad when you are weighing your vote.

Yes but I wasn’t talking about prorogue. I was talking about the caretaker convention.
Caretaker as in during an election or during proguement? Its a little different for each, I only recently learned about this. I'll see if I can find the video explaining it all.

There is no caretaker convention in a prorogue. The executive carries on normally; it’s just a gap between Parliamentary sessions. Caretaker is when Parliament is dissolved for an election, and new work or initiatives are kept to a minimum. That would be a challenge right now I think.

From what I understand, a special warrant issued from the GG to keep government agencies funded and running as per status quo (anything received royal ascent). New work? Can't be anything that requires a bill (So its very limited)

I think a lot more can be done without a new bill, within existing authorities, than you realize. Caretaker convention also restricts any actions that could have political impacts or connotations. That would be severely limiting at the moment.

You and are both correct. All existing bills die on the order paper. The executive still functions,. OICs can be issued to bring into force provisions of bills passed in the last session. Once the prorogue period is over a new session of Parliament begins. "Dead" bills can be re-introduced and the legislative process to pass them begins at step one.

If it involves new money being spent, no. Needs a bill passed
Sure. And as we’ve been seeing, a whole lot is being done within existing monies. You’re right that that will be a constraint past a certain point. I’m flagging the issue that the caretaker period during an election is also a considerable constraint. I don’t know enough about the policy options being considered to have a good sense of whether the still sitting government enough freedom of movement in this moment within existing spending authorities.
