Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???

I remember that, I got trained up too. Not particularly workable for busy border crossings though…
That thing was slick eh? I might even have some troops being troops pictures laying around.

I think there was an average of 275,000 personal vehicles crossing into Canada per day from the US in 2024.
That doesn't include commercial vehicles.

IMO security sacrifices some personal freedoms. If Canadians want to drastically reduce guns, drugs, and people being snuck into Canada it would mean longer wait times at the border to re-enter Canada.

OH NO YOU DON’T.

The issue is more commercial traffic, and all the economic activity they’re involved in.

IMO we’re more likely to make a dent in cross-border weapons smuggling through joint intelligence, investigative, and enforcement efforts than by random x ray. Build teams equipped to do the undercover buys, cultivate and work human sources, and follow the guns upstream to identify the trafficking networks. And really boost punishment for anyone engaged in firearms trafficking.

For sure.

I think us westerners have gotten accustomed to ordering something on Amazon at 2 am and then getting pissy when it doesn't show up within 24 hours. We're in love with our stuff. Making border crossings less porous and slowing it down with x-raying every vehicle would feel like commercial activity is grinding to a halt maybe.

There's always the Qui-Gon bigger fish analogy at play. That recent bust in Cornwall had dozens of brand new, new gen glock pistols confiscated. That's a network and not just some dweeb sneaking in a revolver or two. I'd still like to see a lots of low level traffickers and their goods stopped.

When it comes to stopping human trafficking crossing the border I think it's even more important catching those one offs and two offs sneaking in because it's someone's life at stake.

Slow service is a hard sell if someone isn't directly impacted by what the slow service is resulting from (i.e trying to catch smuggling). We're also a society that goes bonkers when we're "bothered" by an amber alert being sent to our phone, or especially waking us up - but I'll save that for my manifesto.

More inspection at the destinations? Dont clog up the border but have secondary screening and search at logistics facilities that recieve international goods

An interesting take on the still not forgotten SNC-Lavalin scandal

Northern Perspective and Democracy Watch on this issue. CBC and CTV tried to make this into a "long ago, forget about it" issue.

Drunk me loves ordering at 2am.

Sober me sometimes thinks "if the delay was longer I would have cancelled".

You know what I think influences debates? The demeanor of the debators.
