Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???

Oh this is right on par with this government.

Just google “chinese autos spyware” for a good glimpse of what many other countries have discovered and what they're doing about it. Due to cost, and the electrical mandate, how many of these do you think will find there way into government service?

Well done!
Google, Facebook, Apple and others know your daily routine, what your interests are, etc and sell that on the open market for advertisers, on top of a lot of people already posting their lives all over public social media.

I'd be far more worried about what's on a cell phone that always have on you than some cars, and frankly probably would get a lot less data than what those companies already are selling about you

I share the info/cybersecurity concern. I’m not particularly concerned we’ll acquire them for government fleets, but I hope either way that CSE is all over this.

Cars are computers with cameras and SIM cards and wifi and Bluetooth modems and antennas. Incidentally they also have wheels and can go places. We already know China’s domestic national security laws obligate companies to cooperate fully with the state on national security matters, and that this poses info security concerns.

We already have at least one case of a Chinese security camera company ordered to shut down in Canada and leave the country over our own national security concerns after an Investment Canada Act review.

Now those assessments will involve classified intelligence material that the rest of us don’t get to know about. But if we’re banning a static security camera company, that tells me there’s already something really hinky that, presumably, CSE has figured out and assessed.

So, valid to have concerns.

I find it refreshing when things I say for months the PM should do suddenly happen.
You ever played any sports? Ever fought in a combat sport? When your in the middle of a game or a match, when the advantage starts going your way, you don't get cocky and prematurely overconfident about a not yet achieved victory.

Literally, your showing over eagerness. Your counting your eggs before they hatch. Nothing concrete yet and this whole thing stinks. We don't need Chinese state media have free access to our nation.

Thats just the start. You think this going to do us any real favours? We are going to pay dearly for getting in bed with the devil.

I'll take Trump anyday over CCP.

BTW, it may seem refreshing to you that you think your right, but you have been wrong about many things in the past.

Me? Hell I know I am wrong at times and right at others, I am humble enough to admit I know what opinions are vs facts.

I'm just waiting for the Gripen announcement now.
You mean the Chinese J-35 now instead of the F35 or Gripen or any other euro options.

It’s certainly a thing and they all do it. The fact that Nissan knows everything about my car without me even having to go in is disconcerting but sadly a reality.

This would make sense if I was an active participant. I'm just an observer on the sidelines. So I'll cheer all I want.

Canola tariffs going down. I see this as a win.

We are opening the market to cars.

Turns out, when it comes to being hostile to a nearby smaller island nation, there is little difference between the two.

But I've always maintained, we cannot fight the Chinese and the Americans at the same time. If the Americans wanted to work with us, sure, we could fight the Chinese. But if the Americans are putting the screws to us, and the Chinese are willing to make a deal, well, Chinese it is.
BTW, it may seem refreshing to you that you think your right, but you have been wrong about many things in the past.
I said drop EV tariffs and have the Chinese drop canola tariffs.

Carney did just that.

Seems I was right.

I don't know how buying a few cars equates to buying the J35.

I'm firmly team Gripen.

The problem with that is the CCP will prob be there for a very long time, Trump has 3 years max, that is a blip on the radar comparatively. I'd characterize it as this: I'll take the USA any day over CCP.

What I find troubling is I've heard quite senior people speak virulently about the USA, but when the subject of the CCP comes up its "meh, we may as well learn mandarin now..."

Carney has gone to Washington a few times, and each time he came home empty handed.

Carney goes to China and comes back with a deal.

You work with those willing to work with you.

The power of the Canola lobby!
Good deal for Canada as a whole.
The North American auto sector need to smarten up or be stuck with only North America as a market

And this is objectively true. There is no advantageous deal to be had with Trump’s U.S. over and above what we already have. He has shifted the U.S. foreign policy strongly towards mercantilism. That’s a fundamental shift in their approach of economics - and a perplexing adoption of economic thought that became obsolete and largely went out the door in western democracies because in the long run it lessens wealth. But, Trump being Trump, it’s easy to see how an economic philosophy of hoarding as a measure of wealth and of zero sum trade relations would appeal to him.

And this means the only deal he’s interested in with us, the only one he sees as a ‘win’, is where he walks away with more and we walk away with less, rather than one where we trade more freely, innovate more freely, and we each make the most of our respective advantages.

So, our government is right in general to seek those opportunities elsewhere. Usually that will just be reduce barriers and let the market show the opportunities. In some things we’ll need to be really frickin’ careful though.

But yeah, Trump’s gonna be pissed. The EV tariff on China was an act of solidarity with the U.S. Maybe Carney can soften it with some comment about how we no longer see a need to align with Biden’s tariffs or something.

The US auto industry alone produces over 10M units annually... this is not even a drop in the ocean

That's not the point - its our market size that matters.

Selling 49,000 in Canada - if these are only 1 brand/type - would make it number 6 in Canada -

Here are the top 10

1) Ford F series - 138,470
2) Toyota Rav4 - 75,573
3) Honda CRV - 55,987
4) GMS Sierra - 59,962
5) Chevy Silverado - 54,068
6) Hyundai - 41,840
7) Nissan Kicks (?) - 40,956
8) Ram Pickup (1500/HD combines) - 42,758
9) Nissan Rogue - 36,034
10) Honda Civic - 31.054

Secret Police stations.
Bounties on Canadian citizens.
Scientist-spies stealing from Canadian disease labs right before "accidentally" starting a world wide plague.
Billions in real estate fraud.
Fentanyl market.

Heck yeah China loves working with us

No, no... that is all water under the bridge now in the face of our greatest threat - The Donald. Fear the Donald.

Tariffs.

Talks of annexation.

False claims of fentanyl flowing from Canada into the USA

Multiple visits to work out a deal to drop the tariffs leading to nothing.

Talks of how the USA doesn't want any vehicles made in Canada.

The USA has made it clear that it doesn't want to work with anyone, Canada included. So is China the first choice? No. But if it's willing to work with Canada on TRADE then that's what we need to do.

America seems to believe that we will simply stand pat, allow them to try to hurt our economy and we will do nothing in response. This is a shot across the bow saying, hey, we have options if you're not willing to work with us.

I’ll be interested to see what their price points are. We’ll have to be attentive to any sort of dumping aimed to disrupt our domestic manufacture in the long run.

I will never, ever own one of their vehicles. Lots of Canadians will be happy to see some increased competition though

Not sure how many Chinese car companies would be looking to sell here. BYD certainly, not sure if there would be others. Expect to see dealerships pop up in Vancouver and the GTA, maybe elsewhere.

Countermove to watch for: the U.S. is already banning sale or import of Chinese ‘connected’ (digitally) cars from 2027 model year on. Watch for them to say Canadians will not be allowed to drive Chinese manufactured vehicles across the border.

Imagine crossing into the US with one of those EVs lol

With the US exerting effort to push China out of the western hemisphere, and now Canada inviting them in more, this should create some spicy times ahead.

It will be a bit like when the Lada and the Yugo started selling here. I often wondered at who bought those vehicles.

Pushing the Chinese out requires working with allies and regional partners.

By punishing their allies and regional partners, they force their allies and regional partners to turn to China.

This is the folly of their strategy.
