Agreed. Look to the CVs. Not that he’ll turn away an easy seat flip, but his headhunting is about experience, not just bums in seats.

Aitchison is one I could see.

• Similar to Gladu he's got a rep for both wanting and being able to work across the aisle, even campaigned for the CPC leadership focusing on tone and dialing down divisive partisan politics
• His housing platform (currently Shadow minister) from that campaign looks a lot like the current LPC housing plan
• Socially he's a PC
• Adds small town/ rural credibility to the housing file and complement/replacement to big city Gregor Robertson (Minister of State- Rural Housing?)
• His twitter makes it seem plausible that he was one of the targets of the email
  • Is pretty lowkey, critical but fair, topical to his file -little to no boosting of slogan/ragebait of the week
  • Is very low traffic and largely orphaned by the party, very few CPC HQ reposts or boosts of his content

We basically have a Prime Minister who overlaps heavily with the old Progressive Conservatives. If Gladu could stomach crossing the floor, someone moderate within the CPC wouldn’t necessarily be dissuaded by reason of having made a leadership run once.

I'm pretty sure that a couple years back you and I both lamented that the heavyweights under JT and PP were racing to the flanks, leaving the centre open for someone to take it.

That's come true.

It feels like we're at an inflection point, especially with the NDP going with a Singh 2.0 with Lewis instead of a return to the workers issue/working class roots.

It feels like were drifting to towards the LPC dominating the centre as the party of governance, where the only principle is pragmatism, with the NDP and CPC becoming the parties of Left and Right wing vibes content to stand their ground and argue against the world. That might be fine for a term or two, but will be a distaster for our democracy.

We put so much emphasis on the names "Conservative" and "Liberal" tying all past iterations of the parties to their current positions. I believe that if Mark Carney were wearing a blue tie, and leading the current government, making all the same decisions, most of the anti-liberal posters would be praising his governance and decisions (gun reform being the one topic that would need to change). The forum would be full of posts about how well the government was doing in these times of crisis. There would be almost no condescension because we as a forum lean toward progressive conservatism, and have driven off most of the past left leaning members of the forum.

Maybe this is because the Liberal Party of Canada has remained relatively the same over the decades, sliding left or right in their politics depending on the social desires of the loudest parts of the population. The CPC, on the other hand, has gone through multiple iterations since I became of voting age, being the PCs, the Reformers, the CPC, with group splintering off like the PPC. I think they have actually had a much greater swing of policy positions, trying to incorporate everything from far right religious beliefs, to accepting more left leaning policies (abortion, same sex, etc.)

The idea of Mark Carney poaching the best MPs from all parties, so he can put the best qualified people in cabinet to get the most important things implemented and moving forward should be something we see as being party agnostic and best for the country. He could then ride off into the sunset in 2029, having cemented his legacy in Canadian politics with nothing else he needs to accomplish in government.
