Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

If we charge large fees on the Welland Canal for US ships, then they'll do the same to us at the Sault Locks in the UP.
True but they have more ports above Lake Ontario than we have on Lake Superior and it wouldn't be impossible, I hope, to revitalize the North of Superior rail line to bypass the locks entirely and ship out of Sault.

Iran seems to have a solution that doesn't require bending a knee. Perhaps we should take lessons in intestinal fortitude

The advantage of being a totalitarian autocracy is you don’t have to worry about the suffering of the people. I can’t see that working well here.

With the exception of Saturday Night Football what would we actually lose that we couldn't substitute from someplace else other than China.

I'm not sure what you're proposing. Maybe in 10 years and a lot of money to build port facilities and grain elevators at the Soo. The small commercial port adjacent to the steel mill is above the rapids, so you would have to completely gut downtown SSM along the river to put in the necessary infrastructure. Besides, since the shipping channel downriver flows through US waters, I'm sure they would find a way. As well, two locks in the St. Lawrence portion are US.

The more you impose shipping by road or rail vs maritime, the higher cost on the shippers.

It would be expensive, but not impossible, to bypass the Snell and Eisenhower Locks and the Wiley Dondero Canal which links them and have an all-Canadian seaway. This was Dief's intent when the builders left a large potion of the old Cornwall Canal intact.

An interesting , and expensive, fantasy-type project, particularly given the comparatively small tonnage few Canadian ports vs the US (it's hard to find clear data - one site classifies the likes of Parry Sound and Midland as 'major' shipping ports, which is touch laughable). Maybe we could enlarge the Canadian lock at SSM.

For anybody who still doesn't understand why I have such a distrust of the Liberal Party of Canada, it's because ever since 2015 they seem obsessed with government censorship + the elimination of reasonable privacy

You do understand that the various US tech firms (and Chinese) already do basically this with your own phone or home 'Alexa', right?
