Well the numbers are in, and 3.4% is well above expectations. If the economy keeps rebounding at this rate, I dont think the opposition will have much to stand on to counter on the economic file.

It will be intersting to see if this ruling has any impact on the upcoming SCC case opposing the ongoing firearms bans. In previous hearings, the Liberal GoC lawyers argued that the evidence used in the decisions to enact these bans were covered by Cabinet confidence and not subject to examination.

Highly unlikely. The SCC decision appears to be a striking down of a statutory bar to judicial review of a particular sort of decision; previously the law was that that decision could not be challenged in court at all.

Cabinet confidence doesn’t preclude legal actions from going forward; it means that cabinet can have certain information excluded from proceedings, and there’s nothing court can do beyond considering whether the material properly falls within that confidence. If it does, there’s no mechanism to overrule cabinet confidence. While it’s a common law legal principle historically, it’s also codified in section 39 of the Canada Evidence Act.

OTTAWA, July 31 (Reuters) - Canada recorded a much smaller budget deficit over the first two months of the ‌2026/27 fiscal year compared to a year earlier as revenues grew faster than expenses, the finance ministry said on Friday.
The combined deficit for April and ⁠May was C$1.36 billion compared to C$9.91 billion a year earlier.

Revenues over the two months grew by 15.5% on increases in most major categories - primarily gains in income and excise taxes - while expenses posted a more modest 3.7% gain.


Public ‌debt ⁠charges increased by 3.3%, largely reflecting higher effective average interest rates on an increased stock of marketable bonds.
The May deficit was ⁠C$0.31 billion, compared to a C$2.20 billion shortfall in May 2025.
The finance ministry also released ⁠the data for April, showing a C$1.05 billion deficit compared to a ⁠C$7.71 billion shortfall in April 2025.

It remains to be seen if they will splurge at the end of the year, as governments do, but I find it interesting how close the government is to balance.

Maybe having a banker in charge isn't the worse idea.

It's only fair to give credit where it's due...

I am still very much on the fence with Carney but if this in fact is a sign of things turning around then I applaud him for it

I mean alot of his ideas were also risks, some just appear to be paying off
