Fort Hood and III Corps said hello to a new Canadian deputy commander on Tuesday and bid farewell to his predecessor.
Brig. Gen. Peter J. Atkinson replaced Maj. Gen. Peter J. Devlin during a ceremony at III Corps Headquarters.
Devlin complimented the American soldiers he worked with at Fort Hood, calling them smart, disciplined and strong. He wore the III Corps insignia with "fierce pride," he said.
Atkinson is the fifth Canadian army general to serve as deputy commander of III Corps and Fort Hood. The first was Rick Hillier, who served from 1998 to 2000. He recently retired at the rank of general, last serving as chief of the Defence Staff, the highest position in the Canadian military.
Maj. Gen. Matt Macdonald served from 2000 to 2002 and is now chief of Defence Intelligence. Gen. Walter Natynczyk served from 2002 to 2005 and is now chief of the Defence Staff.
Devlin came to Fort Hood in August 2005, deployed with III Corps to Iraq in its 15 months as head of Multinational Corps-Iraq, and is set to return to Canada and assume responsibility as the director-general of Health Services. Before arriving at Fort Hood, Atkinson served as director of General Operations, Strategic Joint Staff.
Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno said Devlin is one of the best general officers with whom he has worked. Devlin and his wife, Judy, were always striving to make Fort Hood a better place, added Odierno, who was recently approved by the Senate for promotion to general and as the next commander of Multinational Force-Iraq.
The Devlins have four children: John, Laura, Paul and Mark.
Odierno applauded the 10-year partnership between the U.S. and Canada, saying it has been a great relationship.
Atkinson said he looks forward to serving in III Corps.
"It'll be great to be part of this community and part of this corps," he said.
Atkinson and his wife, Charlene, have one son, Mitchell, who serves as an officer with the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Afghanistan.
