Fort Hood welcomes new Canadian deputy commander

Fort Hood and III Corps said hello to a new Canadian deputy commander on Tuesday and bid farewell to his predecessor.

Brig. Gen. Peter J. Atkinson replaced Maj. Gen. Peter J. Devlin during a ceremony at III Corps Headquarters.

Devlin complimented the American soldiers he worked with at Fort Hood, calling them smart, disciplined and strong. He wore the III Corps insignia with "fierce pride," he said.

Atkinson is the fifth Canadian army general to serve as deputy commander of III Corps and Fort Hood. The first was Rick Hillier, who served from 1998 to 2000. He recently retired at the rank of general, last serving as chief of the Defence Staff, the highest position in the Canadian military.

Maj. Gen. Matt Macdonald served from 2000 to 2002 and is now chief of Defence Intelligence. Gen. Walter Natynczyk served from 2002 to 2005 and is now chief of the Defence Staff.

Devlin came to Fort Hood in August 2005, deployed with III Corps to Iraq in its 15 months as head of Multinational Corps-Iraq, and is set to return to Canada and assume responsibility as the director-general of Health Services. Before arriving at Fort Hood, Atkinson served as director of General Operations, Strategic Joint Staff.

Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno said Devlin is one of the best general officers with whom he has worked. Devlin and his wife, Judy, were always striving to make Fort Hood a better place, added Odierno, who was recently approved by the Senate for promotion to general and as the next commander of Multinational Force-Iraq.

The Devlins have four children: John, Laura, Paul and Mark.

Odierno applauded the 10-year partnership between the U.S. and Canada, saying it has been a great relationship.

Atkinson said he looks forward to serving in III Corps.

"It'll be great to be part of this community and part of this corps," he said.

Atkinson and his wife, Charlene, have one son, Mitchell, who serves as an officer with the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Afghanistan.

I knew Mr. Devlin when he was a young Lt platoon commander in Duke's Coy 1RCR back in the early 80's &  I was a young snot-nose pte infanteer in the same coy.

Nothing wrong with it, but just out of my own curiosity and sheer ignorance, why would an infantry officier assume responsibility as the director-general of Health Services? Or is there another Peter Devlin?

Many things to be done in Med Svcs over the next few years and this will require extra general officer effort to get it done.  BGen Jaeger will be Surg Gen, and her job (rightly so) will be focused on the provision of health care services to military service persons.  MGen Devlin will be focused on other strategic health care rejuvenation issues that will require:

a. stewardship within the Armed Forces Council and with government; and
b. sherpeding of the new requirements through tresury board approval processes.

He will also bring an ops focus to CF H Svcs Grp.

All in all, a good thing.

I could be mistaken but I worked for a Captain Peter Atkinson in CFRS Cornwallis 22 years ago. He was Armoured and a fine officer, and I do believe this is the same officer. Would anyone know for sure? I'd appreciate it.

I'm Infantry, and for me to compliment an Armoured officer... :blotto:

His bio doesn't mention it but it could the same one.  I had the opportunity to work closely with him while I was the Det Comd for recruiting in Kingston while he was the Base Comd there and even enrolled his son into RMC.  Great guy who is down to earth.

Seems to be a Dragoon trait; Hiller, Natynczyk, Devlin, Atkinson...all very genuine, good natured people, and excellent leaders in their own right.  I have several good friends in the US Army who served at Hood during much of the tenure of the Cdn generals; they state that, to a man, the Canadian's were exemplary leaders, often providing a level of personnel connection with all levels of soldiers, something that is not quite as common in the US Army -- quite a compliment, I believe.

Whoa, whoa Duey. MGen Devlin is not a Dragoon *spit*. He's a Royal Canadian and the best CO yours truly has served under!
