Replacing the Subs

I am, in actual fact, an expert on ASW. Nearly 2000hrs in a Sea King will do that…

Of course you're an expert, I was trying to pump you up as an expert to the experts! Lmoa

No more gun stuff on here please. There is a thread for that. Unless the gun shoots underwater or something!

Well, almost ;)

Up front, I have no backfground in ASW, but this recent RCN submarine RFI situation is making it a topic of interest.

Just a very preliminary search and a topic that comes up a lot is the impact of stealth on submarine design and the combination of AI and UUV in submarine hunting

Any pointers to appropriate websites/articles to flesh out this topic area is appreciated

This caught my attention

Babcock, Fincantieri, Saab seek Poland ties as ‘Orca’ sub award nears

Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Poland’s deputy prime minister and defense minister, has said Warsaw plans to order between three and four new submarines for the naval forces by the end of 2025.
In May 2025, a spokesperson for the Polish ministry told Defense News its experts assigned the highest scores to the offers placed by Germany, Italy and Sweden. However, while these three offers received the highest scores from the Polish Armaments Agency, the military’s procurement arm, the remaining submarine offers have not been discarded amid ongoing talks with foreign governments, according to the spokesperson.

So according to this article, SK is not one of the 3 identified frontrunners for Poland's 4 new subs. The Poles are planning to place their order in the next 4 months. Carney is off to SK for a tour of Hanwha's facility during the 3rd week of October. If the Poles chose the Germans to build their 4 subs, I just don't see how the Germans will be able to handle that order, their own sub build, the Norwegians own needs and somehow magically fit our dozen into the mix. That's over 25 subs over the next 17-20yrs, just not feasible. The other wild card here of course is the Indians and if they chose to go with the German Type 212 as well.

So the French are back in the running with Surcouf...?
It never actually went "missing" Instead it's been part of a secret program to install a fusion reactor drive, rail guns, space lasers and photon torpedos and manned by a crew of artificially enhanced Dolphins and French Anime girls. However the project is somewhat behind on it's proposed delivery date of 1946 and the girls keep end up pregnant via the dolphins, which now adds the need for a nursery with a beach in the sub, a requirement not foreseen in 1946, not to mention the pension obligations that now exist for the dolphins . However the Project Manager is upbeat and hopes to have her ready for sea trials in 2046.

If the Poles go German it should open it us to lock down the SK offer like you say. Going German would give us commonality with a lot of allies though

You had me at the highlighted area.

Alternatively, kill an entire crew with a bad design.. 😉
Although to be fair to the Surcouf itself, she seems to have managed 2 years of operations for the Free French, much of it based out of Halifax, before disappearing. Given her unique design I'm kind of surprised there doesn't seem to have been any real attempt to find her wreck, at least as far as I can tell from Wiki.
