Hello,
I was wondering what everyone here felt about the situation with Russia, obviously the relations between this nation and the West have greatly improved but it is obvious to see there is still tension. After Yeltsin left power, and Putin came into power and threw out the oligarchs, he has managed to increase his power. As he is an ex KGB officer he still most likely has that old soviet mentality. There has beem much improvement there since the economic collapse (when the russian state immediately went from communism to a capitalist economy). Yet it seems as those Putin when he was in office and now when he is out is trying to establish Russia as the main force in Eastern Europe. Events in the Caucausas, Ukraine, Chechnya and Georgia are all examples of this. Russia has been one of the worst areas for media censoship, numerous journalists have been killed. Putin has replaced the oligarchs with a new bach of guys. We all remmember Alexander Litvinenko and how he died after spilling the beans. On the exterior Russia may seem friendly but who knows what they are capable of. They have very close relations with: China, North Korea and Iran. Even though it seems their relations with Iran is in trouble.
