Say what you like about Jijijijimmy and there is a lot that can be said; a lot that is not exaggerated. But in an organization that often used the expression "train as you would fight", he was one of the few commanders who I've worked for who actually clung to that principle. Unfortunately, he clung a little too tightly. He also seemed to abhor the adage "any fool can be uncomfortable", preferring training that would teach pers to be uncomfortable (cold, wet, tired, hungry, etc) even when it was counterproductive to learning.
He preferred everyone to be miserable but him.
Troops dug in or in hooches, he’d been in a Range Hut with the heaters going.

There where a bunch of his ‘vintage’ that had an actual desire to have their forces be combat ready, but didn’t put the cock to folks unnecessarily.

Shortly before we closed Lahr, one Friday, I had spoken on the phone with a former boss in Ottawa about my next posting - he had suggested a couple of interesting opportunities and said that he would be speaking to the CM about them. I also had a quick call to the CM (a friend, or so I thought). After work, in the mess, the BComd came up to me, and seeming to enjoy the frivolity of the matter, asked me what I thought about going to work for Jimmy Cox. Seems that my posting message to 1 CMBG had come in. I was not amused then, nor during the posting.
I’m taking it your former boss desired to screw you…
