PMO's response ...
In a statement to CTV News, the Prime Minister’s Office wrote: “the prime minister has been clear at every opportunity, including in his conversations with President Trump, that Canada is an independent, sovereign nation, and it will remain one.”
... and PMMC's
... Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed interest in investing in the Golden Dome, but wouldn’t mention the cost of joining.

“We are conscious that we have an ability, if we so choose, to complete the Golden Dome with investments and partnerships,” he said in a press conference a day after Trump’s announcement.

“It’s something that we are looking at and something that has been discussed at a high level, but not I’m not sure one negotiates on this. These are military decisions that have been taken in that context, and we will evaluate it accordingly.”

Canadians don't need to run in circles with their hair on fire screaming Canada isn't for sale every time Trump mentions his 51st state bullshit.

It's stupid. Responding to it is exactly what Trump wants.
I don’t think anyone is calling for that. Just highlights what and who we are dealing with. Ambassador says one thing, president says another.

Hey I was 91% wrong about Trump. He's a mess.

I doubt you are. All we get fed is media narrative related to anything and everything 47 does.

As an example somehow miraculously in the last few months Canada is now looking at achieving appropriate defense spending goals - a massive and historical increase. This didn't happen because the LPC suddenly thought it was the right thing to do or because Ukraine has been struggling with Russia (for 9 years!). This happened because of significant pressure that impacts everyday Canadians has finally come to bear on Canada along with frank conversations outside of the public purview.

Somehow, if someone gets a compliment about their cooking after they've upped their game following bullying and harassment from their partner, they may not be all that likely to thank their abusive partner for said change ;)

Its not abuse, it's tough love and the truth hurts. Our cooking was fucking atrocious and we acted like there was nothing wrong. Somebody had to DO something about it because we weren't going to do anything on our own. Canada is the spoiled only-child that just got kicked out of the parents basement at 36 years old.

The less reliance on the US the better.
Relying on Europe would not necessarily be an improvement - particularly with an ocean separating us from potential suppliers - which leaves relying on ourselves.

Politicians talk a lot about what they intend. "We're gonna", "we're gonna", "we're gonna". The same stuff gets recycled over and over in announcements and as answers to questions. The established media promulgate the messages and approximately never call politicians out on their shit by pointing out "you already said that", and insisting on direct answers as to what has actually been done. The result is that an impression of action being taken is created out of repeated statements of good intentions. Politicians must love that.

Imagine if media scrums could be like software development scrums, in which every participant is interrogated as to whether the previously committed tasks were completed and what the next committed tasks will be. Politicians would be made to look like lazy procrastinating indecisive fools at every turn. They would not love that. They might actually get some things done.

That's not going to happen, so Canada will continue to bask in the aspirational statements of its politicians while its major services decline. I expect continued repetition of "next Tuesday for sure". See where things are in 3 months, 6 months, a year.

As for annexation, that balloon keeps getting bumped back into the air mostly by TV personalities who won't stop talking about it, I suppose because they think it holds viewers' attention. It's amusing that one of our responses to an imagined threat to our sovereignty is to put our imported mostly ceremonial head of state on a stage to deliver some well-sounding phrases.

The less reliance on the US the better.
Canada will also be reliant upon America.
It’s simple math of the size of America both as population and GDP (and Military power).

While our current administration is a fucking cluster, Europe isn’t exactly a reliable partner either.

Trump is going to keep twisting the annexation blade until Canada starting putting serious efforts into National Defense, and that isn’t solely related to budget
