US Presidential Election 2024 - Trump vs Harris - Vote Hard with a Vengence

Its going to be a very very wild ride here in Canada - no matter who sits in power in Ottawa - besides the Ukrainians and maybe the Taiwanese, I think Canada stands the most to 'lose' under a Trump America.

My daughter is off to PA in Aug 2025 to play D2 soccer on a scholarship, rural PA in fact.

I was fully prepared to eat my words! I was wrong.

But holy fuck I did not expect to be this wrong.
Yup, this sums me up too. Something went wildly wrong for the Democrats here.

In any case- Americans made their choice and he won. Republicans took the senate as well; the house isn’t called yet. His cabinet will I’m sure, be interesting. A lot of people made some fairly desperate long bets on Trump and will see that loyalty rewarded, probably to the detriment of some functionings of government.

Once the facts are fixed, all you can do is work with them as they are. Canada’s going to face very challenging policy questions. We and the rest of our western allies are going to be dealing with a very, very different America- one we can put much less faith in, unfortunately. This will have implications for our national security and sovereignty that will take time to unfold.

Ukraine is utterly fucked. Biden has two months to take such bold executive action as he can, but in this respect, the winner of the election is Putin. We can expect an emboldened Russia. Poland and the Baltics have cause to fear in the mid term.

Taiwan also has to ask itself if the conventional guarantor of its security and sovereignty can be relied on anymore. There’s a case to be made for no, it cannot.

The single biggest real thing to watch for up here will be if Trump follows through on his promise of across the board trade tariffs.that could be economically bumpy for us. We will probably also have problems at the border with significant influxes of people leaving America hoping for asylum here.

Other people smarter and more awake than I will, before too long, have many other implications for us to consider.

FWIW I think the Dems made a grave tactical error many years ago by selecting Biden as their candidate.

The POTUS should NOT be a mediocre 70 something who has some kind of cognitive condition - and Biden should not have been there either.

A number of years ago I said in a country of 350 MILLION people this is the best America - land of the free and the home of the brave - could do?

With an eye towards looking at our own backyard. Our house is at a point of time where the minority parties surrounding the liberals won't support them for very much longer. If an election is triggered here, or even the regular election date next year occurs. It is unlikely that Trudeau survives. Poilievre's platform, and baseline politics might align well with the Trump administration.

Not going to say that I called it yesterday. But I firmly believe what I said held true. Much of this election result can be attributed to an undercurrent of institutional racism, and sexism in the US. Many of the news outlets are identifying how Trump resonated with men. Polls don't mean Jack, it's what happens in that voting booth that matters. And people know that it's a secret ballot. They often vote their conscience, but more often will vote against what they don't want.

The next 4 years are going to be interesting.

I refuse to believe that Harris isn't POTUS right now because 51%+ of US are racist and or sexist. That's just a silly and pouty childlike excuse.

The Dems appointed a candidate and she flopped.

They lost this by leaving Biden in place for too long and then putting in a very unpopular VP to replace him. Its almost like they were throwing the election.

I think the highlighted above is part of the problem for the Dems. They are pushing people away.

Not sure how many readers had money riding last night.

Although Team Red has not won the Popular Vote in 20 years, my $ is on them winning the Electoral College.

Check.

Since the 25 least populated states have about 16 per cent of the population, a sixth of the country can control the Senate. Therefore, my $ is on Team Red taking the Senate.

Check.

That will give Team Red control of the Supreme Court.

Speaking of the Supreme Court of the US - is that an appointment for life?

Can POTUS veto a decision by the Supreme Court?

The name calling in both sides has to stop.
It will…for about a day and a half.

The tariffs thing will hurt the US. Prices in US and Canada for most commercial goods (so not houses, etc) are, at a quick glance, similar numbers but in different currencies. So much so that Lululemon, for example, doesn’t even change the tag bc it’s the same number but in USD. And that was before tariffs.

I can’t see a situation where imposing tariffs on whatever will reduce prices in the US.

It's because people can't emotionally handle differences of opinion. The amount of hate and vitriol spewed at people who say something others don't like is ridiculous.

I find my parents generation is the worst. They get borderline angry and irrational when someone questions something. The amount of boomers on my Facebook who can't remain civil is crazy.

The fact is if 20 people are in a room, half of them are picking either Trump or Harris.... are they all Fascist/Woke/etc?

Or are people a lot more complex than that and have their reasons for why they vote for a certain candidate. I personally think most people are inherently good, even if they have a difference of opinion.

I would suggest that the 10 supporting Harris would identify as “woke” as in “awareness of social and political issues”.

I would agree as well. However, as Tommy Lee Jones’ character says in Men in Black:

A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it.

If Kamala had won, would people have then said that the people had spoken and democracy had triumphed?

They already stated they would contest and that it was rigged.

Speaking of which, has Harris conceded?
