An Alberta superior court judge has ruled that the review of the constitutionality of the separatists’ proposed referendum question will proceed in court. The separatists had applied to have the ordered review quashed. This will ensure that, should the referendum pass and it eventually goes to a vote, the constitutionality of the referendum question will have already been judicially affirmed. IMO it’s a good thing to cover that off up front.

I’m hearing the Alberta cabinet is considering referring the question on an expedited basis to the Supreme Court. There is a process for that, so it could very well snuff out opportunity for further legal challenges on the wording of the question. That’s the only thing in play right now with this case.
Also, some in the US are now smelling blood … and did I miss something as both BC (currently*) and Manitoba have no simmering separation desires.
* Rocky Mountain Project being a different beast > the idea of hiving off mostly rural BC interior and North from the lower mainland and the Marxist nut jobs in Victoria. But staying in Canada until Alberta/ Sask leave.

Seems as time goes on resistance grows, the alberta next panels are getting more and more vo ak against governemrn policies, especially those handling separating.

I don't mind her loosening up the requirements if it means the average working class person has more of a say in where their province/community is going. No problem at all.

People criticize Danielle Smith a lot for treating the province like the democracy that it is.
She proposed the Alberta Pension Plan, held a series of townhalls (I attended 2 for professional reasons) and hosted a few weeks of 'open mic' call-in sessions on the radio where people from across the province could call in & speak with her directly to express their views and why they had them - all on live radio.
It turned out the public wasn't overly fond of the idea, so she shelved it. Hasn't been brought up since.
Isn't that exactly how democracy is supposed to work?
Aren't the people supposed to have a say in what direction their elected governments go in?
Aren't the people supposed to be able to provide feedback & direction on big issues that directly affect them?
Proposing an idea to the general public & soliciting their feedback - and allowing that feedback to be as transparent as live call-in sessions on public radio waves is exactly what I want from my government, personally.

The federal government has made it clear they are willing and wanting to do things at the federal level whether the citizens support the idea or not.
They've made it extremely clear they don't give a single flying f**k what the citizenry want, and have asked for people's opinions/ideas precisely 0 times.
Did ANYBODY ask the general public how they feel about lending China a billion dollars?
Did anybody ask us if we wanted online censorship laws?
Did anybody ask us if we wanted to do away with our previous bail policy, or mandatory sentences for certain crimes/offenders?
Did anybody ask us how we felt about mass basically unvetted immigration?
No. Nobody in the federal government did.
Nor will they.
Why? Because they don't f**king care about your opinion. They couldn't give less of a shit about what you think actually.
(If they had any interest in what the public thinks about certain issues, they would ask for that feedback & be transparent about what that feedback says. But they haven't...
They will push ahead with their list of absolutely horrible ideas & will impose those ideas on you and I alike whether we agree with them or not.
And every few years they'll tell us what a great job they've done and how much better things are for Canadians because of them, and ask us to donate to their party and vote for them all over again.
The point of my rant here is this...
If I look at how the spirit of democracy is being exercised by the Alberta government, and how the spirit of democracy is being exercised by the federal government - between the two, I much prefer Alberta's way.
Even if some of the ideas put forward seem silly.

(Media were allowed in about 15 minutes prior to the official start so they could ask some backgrounder questions & bring themselves up to speed on the issues that were about to be discussed.)
EDIT - Don't blame you for a second for giving up on reading through it, especially the comments. Some of the comments, and some of the questions asked with a straight face at the event, are beyond stupid.
To be fair, wasn't it Jason Kenney who was our Premier during Covid? At least for most of it?

Alberta government plans to add 'citizenship marker' to driver's licences (to become a combined health card). I get that there are certain residency requirements to access provincial programs and benefits, but what does citizenship have to do with it? And wouldn't they need to cooperation of the federal government to access this information?

Alberta is literally teeming with people who have suddenly appeared from overseas. There’s a lot of deep concern the feds are flooding the province to tilt the referendum.

Reminds me of my time in Rwanda (1994). When we were hiring locals, we asked them for some form of ID, not thinking anything much about it. Many seemed reluctant to provide it or said they had lost their (compulsory?) national ID card. It was only later that we realized that their ID cards included their tribal identity (Tutsi, Hutu, Twa, etc) and their immediate fear was that we would deny employment based on origin. But for some it was the recent history of having lost loved ones whose ID card had led to their death.
I can't think of any benefit programs in Alberta that are not available to permanent residents, but to citizens. The only thing that citizens can do that PRs can't is vote.
