Alberta is literally teeming with people who have suddenly appeared from overseas. There’s a lot of deep concern the feds are flooding the province to tilt the referendum.

Even if that were true, why does a piece of provincial identification need to reference it?

I suspect that when the federal government tells them to go pound sand when they ask for the information, they will gleefully say; 'see, the federal government hates Alberta'.

Alberta government plans to add 'citizenship marker' to driver's licences (to become a combined health card). I get that there are certain residency requirements to access provincial programs and benefits, but what does citizenship have to do with it? And wouldn't they need to cooperation of the federal government to access this information?

Sounds like an ideological solution looking for a problem.

Alberta immigrants report increase in hostility, racist narratives​

Immigrants and those supporting newcomers in Alberta are seeing a rise in hostility and racist narratives, according to a recent report.

Community advocates say the trend is causing increased anxiety among immigrants and is prompting organisations to take additional measures to protect both clients and staff, reports The Canadian Press (CP).

“I hear from people in my own communities—women specifically who wear hijabs—many bad things and we realise there is a need to educate people,” says Shamaila Akram, vice president of case management at Calgary’s Centre for Newcomers, in the report.

“Clients are coming with severe anxiety and sometimes panic attacks after hearing racial slurs outside our door. We have instances where they’re being harassed while walking in downtown.”

The idea was suggested, and is now currently being looked at in more detail, because of the sharp rise in immigrants arriving in Alberta & the sharp increase in crime broadly thought to be connected to that.

I am NOT suggesting that there is a disproportionate amount of crime (of any sort) linked to recently arrived immigrants.

What I AM saying is that there are types of crimes that tend to stay "within the community" that only comes to our attention when members from that community ask law enforcement for help. (For example, over the last few years, there has been a dedicated/persistent threat of blackmail & arson within a certan SE Asian community)

Or about 2 years ago now, when Edmonton Police seized several handguns from youth at West Edmonton Mall (multiple incidents) - including an incident that had 2 armed groups stalking each other at the mall, which resulted in an exchange of gunfire in one of the parkades

In the above incidents, those involved were mostly PR's or recently arrived immigrants.



I believe the suggestion was to make it easier for law enforcement to know who is a recently arrived immigrant, who has PR status, and who is a citizen - for the purpose of quickly starting deportation proceedings for non-citizens.

We deport so few people a year, while we follow up on it…quick deportation proceedings isnt something I see. I think it’s like just over 10 thousand people a year Canada wide- the majority for failed refugee bids

I see your point. I don't have any inside track but get the sense that a lot of the home invasions, extortions, etc. happenings in, and particularly around Toronto, are very much internal to certain diaspora communities.

But from a criminal law enforcement/community safety perspective, other than calling the CBSA to run a name, what are the police going to do with a citizenship marker on a D/L? Police don't start deportation proceedings.

Deport 10,000 then bring in almost a million. Kinda defeats the purpose.
