My point is that GGs individually cost about the same as a single VAC education cost.

Probably not a huge drain on the public purse, relatively speaking.

Based on the 2021 census, 80,000+ vets with 10+ years of service. So lets say each takes the 90k. Thats $7,200,000,000 on vet education benefits. Compared to this, GG is a drop in the bucket.

USA: We'll build libraries / museums for former presidents.

Canada: We hate former GGs.

Former national leaders should be encouraged and supported to remain engaged and involved in civic life.

Each GG is spending about the salary of a MWO IPC 4 (non spec) or Capt IPC 4 (GSO) (excluding employer costs and any allowances).

If you can guarantee me that there are not five MWO / Capt+ in the CAF who aren't pulling their weight, I will agree that support to former GGs should be kiboshed.

A common theme here is that we need to normalize and incentivize not having to spend a full 25 years in the military. Get in, do some stuff, move on as a productive member of the civilian work force. The VAC Education money for 6 and 12 years service is great for that. Whether it's a Lt Col or a Cpl. Less so for the former.

It's quite different than 70 or 80+ year old former GG's who made $400K/yr for 5 years getting a hidden slush fund for the rest of their life.

Buying them a new car every year would hardly break the bank; it's the principle not the dollar amount.

What about the same fund for MPs once they retire? Or former party leaders, say Poilievre after he moves on?
