The RCAF's Next Generation Fighter (CF-188 Replacement)

I’m in the camp that we end up with a number of fighters greater than the previous number of 88.
I come to this conclusion by observation. The RCN is going down the path of a much larger number of warships than it’s had in 50yrs - 15 Rivers, 12 subs, 16-20 light frigates - these are numbers beyond anything we’ve had in 50-60yrs.
The Army is being fleshed out for an expansion beyond what it’s had in 40+yrs - AD, Armour, Mobile Arty, HIMARS, more LAV’s, etc. Its expansion hasn’t been finalized in how far it will go.
The RCAF has expanded its tanker fleet, increasing the number of airframes replacing the CP-140’s, acquiring Globaleye’s, UAV’s, expanded helo’s. Based on all of the above I think that it’s very reasonable to expect that it will acquire more than 88 fighters when the dust settles.
I could be wrong but I think Canada has actually never had 15 full sized destroyers, except at the end of WW2 where they finished with 17 having lost, broken or just plain wore out another 19 destroyers during the war. Lots of frigates though.
Certainly never more than 4-5 submarines.

My thoughts? Only a guess. PM MC bought the SAAB AWACs to possibly appease the swedes and he will go all in on F35s to keep the USA satisfied (He has shown he is trying to be their friend recently).

TRy to please everyone except the Canadian public.

That is what I hope as well.

The biggest reason Carney will buy Gripens and GlobalEyes is not for either of those two capabilities specifically, but to help Europe increase its manufacturing capacity at a rate that it can’t do without Canada’s collaboration, particularly now as a recently added participant in SAFE.

That’s a bit of a stretch no? Our 40 million people will create that kind of ‘hook’ to hold onto 400 million people?

But will some of the manufacturing not have to move here to support our economy?

Why a stretch? European manufacturing, especially aerospace, is having challenges expanding capacity. Canada has been assessed by many to have spare manufacturing capacity that Europe has noted its interest in seeking collaborative relief. There’s no ‘hook’ necessary. Europe (Germany and France in particular) is very interested to identify SAFE member countries able to increase the collective capacity, notwithstanding the population of any country that could help improve manufacturing productivity.

But will some of the manufacturing not have to move here to support our economy?

Not necessarily, but rather to update domestics manufacturing to augment the essentially maxed out European manufacturing.

IF - If we do have some Gripen's in the mix and IF they are assembled in Montreal, then I'm going to say that Toronto gets to be the location of the new NATO 'Defense, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB) and the roughly 3,500 new jobs that go with it.

Canada being Canada, there has to be 'Yin with that Yang' or the whole system grinds to a halt.

I have a feeling it's because we are all collectively being set up for WW3 here... (or if the GWOT was WW3, then the next mass culling)

The west seems quite poised to start a fight with Russia, with the UK being quite open that it is trying to actively prepare for such a fight.

But such a crazy time to be a young adult & joining the military today. These kids will have kit come online (like the RCD) and just won't be able to appreciate how stuff ever got done without it

It’s important to ‘be prepared’ even if your not. Telling your potential opponent your redlines lets them know exactly what they can get away with.
