Shame that as the third or so in line for the Crown, Harry seems to have SO little agency that it’s all the fault of the missus :)

Yah Meghan totally crushed his soul! The boy lost his panache!!

Seen it happen to so many young fellows! I am thankful everyday that my wife is awesome!
She pulled him out of the completely dysfunctional royal family. The group that ordered him out of the military so he wouldn't outrank his older brother.

She was attacked by the British press for trying to protect him from them - by not playing their games.

He still gets the highest credit in my eyes. Dude did the deal in AFG…twice. William can quietly behind the scenes complain about how people think he didn’t truly answer the call of service, but staying back home flying a non-combat yellow helicopter isn’t the same as Harry, his dad or even his uncle (perv stuff aside) being out there on regular operations. The ‘we must protect our future king’ so stay out of combat schtick is weak…

Isn’t that why you have a line of succession?

His granddad had a fairly distinguished career in the Navy in World War II, and his great grandfather was a turret commander on HMS Collingwood at Jutland.

At least his medals would be real not the blister pack worn by recents.

Those are real medals, as the representative of the sovereign shes entitled to them. Every GG wears them and has work them since their inceptio Were Harry to be the GG hed also wear a CD.

Do you have a low opinion of sartrchs as well?

I don’t see him expressing a ‘low opinion’ of anyone; he’s saying that flying civilian paramedic flights isn’t on the same level as being armour on the ground in Helmand, or an Apache gunner flying over RC-South. That’s not unreasonable. Nor is it unfair to point out that the Crown appears to have protected the heir from the more dangerous service.

None of that takes away from William flying air ambulance, which is perfectly honourable and excellent in its own right.

Well i think "air ambulance" is a misnomer there as well - he was flying an RAF sar helicopter in the North Atlantic before that. I'll call that about a wash risk wise between the two.

The fortitude it takes to fly out into those conditions, so that others may live, is impressive by any measure, IMHO.

In the central tower of RMC, there is (or used to be) portraits of the ex-cadets who died on duty. Pre-Afghanistan, I was always struck by the fact that most of the post-war portraits were of aircrew. Flying can be a dangerous business.

That’s quite the leap in snark.

How did SAR Techs figure into my comment about two brothers, both in succession to the Crown of England, one flying multiple tours in combat and the other relegated by family policy to a non-combat role?

Brihard should say a thousand Hail Mary’s, I suppose, but he’s a grunt-cop so knowing something generally operates in the air and sometimes helps people in distress is pretty good, I’d say. I’d give him some latitude here. 👍🏼

Your call on calling things a wash between Harry flying Apaches in AFG and William flying SAR in the UK, if you’d like. I don’t.

For overall risk, I’d personally rank helos this way, from highest risk down…I’ve done three in the list and a friend of mine is 4/5 (which includes yellow) and we both rank them the same:
  • grey
  • black
  • green
  • yellow
  • white/orange (trg)
That’s not a comment on public perceptions of risk, or the appreciation of those who may directly or indirectly benefit from any of these above, helping/benefitting them.

Yup. Grey does that more than yellow, and the interface with danger is…well, zero inches/mm. Black may not do it in SS8, but its interface distance is often much closer to grey than yellow is.
