Harry and Meghan to step down as senior royals

Yup. Grey does that more than yellow, and the interface with danger is…well, zero inches/mm. Black may not do it in SS8, but its interface distance is often much closer to grey than yellow is.

You've confused me, admittedly any easy accomplishment. ;)

All I know is I have been on both ends. Its one thing knowing that guy over there is trying to kill you, and its another thing knowing the earth is trying to kill you.

Anyone who walks forward in either scenario can keep the shine on a bar with me any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

Imagine the fortitude of the SAR Techs that winch themselves down onto the deck to effect the rescue.

Immeasurable. Truly heroic people.

Well i think "air ambulance" is a misnomer there as well - he was flying an RAF sar helicopter in the North Atlantic before that. I'll call that about a wash risk wise between the two.
My apologies- I forgot he flew actual SAR as well. I think I do correctly remember he went over to civil air ambulance though?

Whether SARTECHS or flight crew, I promise I have nothing but immense respect for those who do that they do that others may live.

Yes, when he retired from active service he worked for a while for a regional air ambulance.

Fun fact: first big go for Harry back in the UK is jumping from a perfectly good airplane for a Canadian veterans' charity.

If you go drinking with them, prepare for the mother of all hangovers, which is real fun as your diving next morning...
Did that after a SAREX in '98 IIRC - which was made all the more somber (and drunker) by the fact that a SAR Labrador out of Greenwood crashed in Gaspe, killing the whole crew.

I seem to recall there was a time when being a medevac crew in North America was considered one of the top 10 most hazardous occupations out there - likely isn't much better in UK, where Helicopter EMS is heavily used.

I also recall similar discussion, though it was focused on USA (not North America). Going back a few years, studies indicated that the UK had significant better safety records.

A 26-year comparative review of United Kingdom helicopter emergency medical services crashes and serious incidents

Results: A total of 13 accidents or serious incidents involving HEMS aircraft were identified from Civil Aviation Authority records, only 1 of which was a fatal accident. It was estimated that approximately 230,000 HEMS missions occurred in the United Kingdom between 1987 and 2013, giving an absolute accident incidence of approximately 0.0057% and a fatal accident incidence of approximately 0.00043%. The accident and fatal accident rate per 10,000 missions in the United Kingdom was 0.57 and 0.04, respectively. This compares with published rates from Germany, Australia, and the United States with accident rate per 10,000 missions ranging between 0.57 and 0.75 and fatal accident rates per 10,000 missions ranging between 0.04 and 0.23.

Without digging out any of the background on US safety record, my recollection is that commercialization (i.e., profit motive) of the air ambulance industry was a major factor in their poorer record.

Makes sense, most of the stuff I'd seen had been US...the main issues being the choppers having to land in areas with tight nets of high voltage lines and such with minimal night vision equipment. I kind of laugh at the "Trauma Flight" folks in Island Lake - didn't take them much not to fly, especially at night, which made me wonder how many of them were NVG certified - there were a few I'd seen wearing them, but not always when they showed up to give a patient a ride over to St Theresa Point or Garden Hill airports.

Yeah i read the original comment - not yours - as implying Williams service was lesser for flying SAR. If thats not what @Good2Golf meant my apologies for misreading it.

Got it, markppcli. 👍🏼 I didn’t say it’s less, just that there is a narrative from some in the UK in/near The Family and their supportive connections to various elements of the media, that behind the scenes have tried to minimize Harry’s service and out William upon a pedestal for his service to nation, yet downplay Harry’s. William is sensitive to that enough that he bristles when the Harry-supportive crew let in the William needs to be less of a whiny guy on the backside, about the differing aspects of either’s service. I know anecdotally of some of the lads who fling those who dare around the sky, and they don’t have much time for The Family’s and Friends’ efforts to portray Harry as the galavanting guy avoiding responsibility whilst William did all for nation.
