Canada seeks to buy Long Range Precision Rockets (probably US MLRS or HIMARS)

There's an Commercial line the has a class of RoRo called the Orca class running between Seattle and Alaska. It looks interesting for several reasons.

The Alaska Marine Highway enters the chat.

I've been on it a couple of times. It's a great experience!

The secret is to ensure that there is surplus capacity in peace time so that some of that capacity can be sacrificed in a crisis while still maintaining service.

That's a very temporary solution. How long do we leave NFLD cut off from the rest of Canada ? That province depends on those ferry's for food and all sundry or life supporting goods.
Would we be cutting off Nfld from Canada, or cutting off Canada from Nfld?

That doesn't work anymore... The media and opposition would call surplus capacity government waste, and the government that decided to buy a surplus would be voted out.

The media and government have trained votera to think in year to year, maybe election to election, and not to consider the long term.

That truly is the answer for this type of capability. The idea of a "big honking ship" in the CAF inventory that sits around for 360 days a year doing nothing is a waste of resources. One that provides surplus capacity in peacetime (possibly even with active or reserve crews) sharing time operating it from time to time during the year benefits not only a surge military capability but also full-time civilian infrastructure resilience.

That speaks of a lack, or failure, of an effective long term education and communication strategy on the part of the government and military. It's an own goal.

So this is your answer then Point-Class sealift ship. Its a good answer.

If we want a big honking ship, thats a pan CAF level change in doctrine, that will have major effects on the RCAF and CA as well. And it wont be sitting idle 360 days a year. Lots of Navys have this capability and they are used more than 5 days a year.

That's making its way into the next draft of "Unsustainable."
