2025 Federal Election - 28 Apr 25

If Trudeau has in fact had such an iron grip on the party over his tenure - a claim many here have made, with a lot of truth to it - does that not logically mean that his resignation from PM and the selection of a new leader, particularly one not coming from within the existing cabinet, is in a position to do some considerable steering of the partyā€™s direction?

A lot of choice words have been used to describe Trudeau, some focusing on how tightly PMO has controlled the party. If he had that control when he was PM, and if heā€™s no longer PM, that should necessarily mean thereā€™s a considerable redistribution of power and influence within the party. Carney certainly hasnā€™t seemed shy to grab the wheel and change course.

Who said debates don't matter ? Can you provide references for that ?

I know people have said polls donā€™t matter, myself included. However, I donā€™t recall anyone saying debates don't matter. Debates definitely matter, especially when a candidate gets that one big gotcha moment. A well timed, easily remembered shot at an opponent can falter a campaign as well as a scandal.

"You had a choice" uttered by Brian Mulroney (or words to that effect)

Listened to Carney at Irving.

Subs - no numbers, protecting the negotiation process
Ice Breakers - for the Navy? or for the CCG (I may have missed it but I sure hope its for the CCG)
New mandate for the CCG (more involved in the RMP accumulation)
Pay Raise for the CAF - Okay.....
Review of F35 - Other options? More Canadian content? More Canadian supply chain
Review of AEGIS - Not much more to add to the F35 review
MTF when the "Red Book" comes out
More troops and sailors for the CAF
"Concept of a Career in the CAF" WTF is that?

It's a whole lot of campaign promises that really require no action or fulfilment.

There's a lot of hand wringing over how a great many Canadians are somehow still looking at the Liberals as a valid option to govern the country after the disaster that has been Justin Trudeau, but there should equally be a great deal of questioning as why more Canadians are not seeing the Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre as the preferable alternative. It's not like we haven't had extended periods of Conservative support during the Mulroney and Harper years. It's not like there is a lack of Liberal policy failings to point to. Why then is Pierre Poilievere not able to connect with more Canadians?

Some here I'm sure will say it's because Canadian voters are "stupid", "ignorant" or "naive" but I think that's a pretty trite and dismissive answer. The Conservatives have had years of declining support for the Liberal government and its policies to "sow the seeds" for a Conservative return to power but have somehow failed. Is it the leader? The message? The "Trump factor"?

Democracy is a bad form of government except for all the others.

Eventually the voters figure it out - they vote in the party that will "give" them the most - without understanding why they pay so much in tax.

Am I the only one who sees the absolute hypocrisy that is the Liberal Party of Canada. It's truly breathtaking that they can change their spots with such ease and without paying a price.
No. No you are not!

I've been living in a state of pure confusion & frustration for the last while as we've watched a political party do everything they can ignore good ethics, abandon Canadian values, violate Canadian law, use lawfare to punish those who end up in their crosshairs, make decisions that expose Canadians to a real risk needlessly, destroy the Canadian economy, destroy the motivation and ambition of the younger generations, and steal or mismanage absolutely absurd amounts of money...

And Canadians will still sit there and be like "Yeah but that Pierre guy, we can't let him be elected!"

Literally, I feel like it's a mass case of Stockholm Syndrome...

You aren't alone in being absolutely bewildered at how quickly & easily Canadians are willing to vote for a party that's destroyed the country as we knew it, and are so paranoid & harsh towards the guy who just wants some common sense policies that actually work to our benefit.

We've had the LPC in power for 3 terms. 3 terms of DAILY scandals. 3 terms of our country rapidly falling in every meaningful metric. 3 terms of rising unemployment, false economics, and blatant foreign interference...

And it looks like half the country would rather have a 4th term of the same, instead of giving the other guy a chance for even 1 term.

Stockholm Syndrome of sorts.

He also said the Conservatives lacked integrity šŸ¤£

There's a pot/ kettle moment if I ever saw one.

the PC's and Libs switched positions on free trade. We can handle whatever policy switches the Liberals undergo now.
if the polls are to be believed the CPC and PP are not attractive to voters in the post Trudeau/Trumpian era

I think the word you're looking for is 'fickle'

Possibly the TVA Moderator would not be as "friendly" as the national debate Moderator.

No kidding!

I wonder if Carney is looking at a 50% pay raise for CAF like Freeland proposed ?
My question around this is...how?? How can rather country afford this??

I'm all for it. But how are we going to pay for this proposal while slashing & dismantling the few remaining revenue streams that we have?

I really want Carney to explain to us how jacking up the taxes & fees for industry, while severely limiting any expansion of industry, is going to somehow result in us being able to pay for half of what he's been saying...

You are right.

For me, I just don't believe the polls.
